A valuable Lord Murugan idol was stolen from the Sri Maragadha Bala Dhandayuthapani Murugan Temple at Perukaranai village near Madurantakam in Tamil Nadu, after unidentified thieves allegedly breached multiple layers of security during the early hours of Wednesday. The hilltop shrine, popularly known as Nadu Palani, is now at the centre of a police investigation after the theft was discovered by priests and temple administrators in the morning. (
The stolen idol is around 2¼ feet tall and is carved entirely from emerald, according to reports. It was brought from Mysuru and installed at the temple in 2008. The value of the idol has not yet been officially ascertained, but its material and religious significance make the theft particularly serious.
Police said the sanctum had been protected by three heavy iron doors and shutters, along with an alarm system and CCTV cameras. Despite these precautions, the burglars apparently managed to enter the sanctum and remove the deity. Investigators are examining how the intruders gained access and whether they had prior knowledge of the temple’s layout.
The manner in which the security system was defeated has raised further questions. The thieves reportedly disabled the alarm by cutting its connections before taking the idol from its pedestal.
