Jio Lists, and the Ledger Changes: What the Debut Did and Didn’t Do

On the morning of 28 October, Jio Platforms opened for trading at ₹1,358, a listing gain of about 21% over its ₹1,119 issue price. By the time the bell rang, the stock had risen 27% on listing day, valuing the company at more than ₹13.05 trillion. The rally continued the next day, and at its high Jio commanded a market value of ₹13.70 trillion, about 33% above the IPO price.

The arithmetic then moved the league tables. Reliance Group’s listed companies reached a combined ₹28.9 lakh crore, ahead of Tata Group at ₹25.6 lakh crore and Adani Group at ₹16.6 lakh crore. Jio also became India’s second most valuable company, overtaking Bharti Airtel. Reliance Industries and Jio now occupy first and second place among all listed Indian companies.

How the jump happened

The IPO itself was modest relative to the company. The offering was entirely a fresh issue of about ₹30,213 crore, with no sale by existing shareholders, and it amounted to only about 3% of Jio’s market value. Reliance Industries held 66.43% before the issue and will hold 64.48% after. A small float meant strong demand chased few shares, which helps explain the sharp first-day pop.

The ranking is a sum of the market values of all listed companies in a group. Before 28 October, Jio had no market value to add. Once it listed, a business already owned by Reliance appeared as a new line on the group’s balance sheet of public valuations. Tata’s and Adani’s numbers did not change because of Jio. The movement was Reliance moving up, not the others moving down.

What the scoreboard hides

The headline figure deserves a caveat. Reliance Industries’ own share price already reflected the value of its roughly two-thirds stake in Jio, and listing Jio does not create a second Jio. Adding both companies’ market values to a group total counts that stake twice. Bloomberg calculations before the listing valued Reliance’s Jio stake at about ₹7.3 trillion, around 45% of the parent’s market value. Much of the “new” value in the group total is therefore bookkeeping. This is how group rankings are routinely compiled, so the lead over Tata is real by the usual measure, but it is more modest in economic terms than the headline suggests.

What actually changed

The first change is price discovery. For years the market had to guess what Jio was worth inside Reliance. Now a live price exists, updated every second, and it will move with each quarterly result, tariff decision and subscriber report. Jio’s management faces the scrutiny that comes with a listing: disclosures, analyst questions and an investor base that can sell.

The second is the so-called holding company discount. Indian parents often trade below the sum of their listed parts. One independent analyst estimated Reliance’s share price implied a roughly 36% discount on its Jio stake. The listing makes that gap visible, and analysts expect it to narrow, though not vanish. One estimate saw scope for a 5–8% re-rating of Reliance shares, and the extent of any change depends on Jio’s performance after listing. There is a flip side. If Jio’s shares fall, the transparency works against the parent.

The third is the balance sheet. Jio plans to use ₹27,500 crore of the proceeds to repay loans of its main operating subsidiary, trimming debt at the telecom business that funded India’s 4G and 5G build-out.

The fourth is access. Ordinary investors can now own the telecom arm directly. Shares worth up to ₹2,500 crore were reserved for eligible Reliance shareholders, an unusual nod to the parent’s retail base.

What did not change

Jio’s subscribers, towers, spectrum and tariffs are the same as they were a week ago. Its operating subsidiary served 533.3 million customers at last count. Reliance still controls the company, and it still sells a product that most of India uses. Tata Group still runs its steel, cars, software and airlines, and Adani Group its ports, power and cement. A stock exchange can reorder the list of the biggest groups, but not the businesses behind it.

The first-week story is demand for scarce shares in a landmark offering. The longer story begins with the first quarterly results, when the market will test whether a company valued at over ₹13 lakh crore can deliver the earnings, tariff increases and new revenue from 5G and digital services that justify it. For Reliance, the listing has delivered a bigger number, a cleaner valuation, and a lighter debt load. Whether it has delivered a lasting lead over Tata and Adani depends on what Jio earns, and on where Tata and Adani’s own valuations go.
