Tamil Nadu is facing a disturbing series of violent crimes, raising fresh questions about public safety and the TVK Model of governance under Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. Across several districts, incidents ranging from brutal murders and beheadings to dismemberment, armed attacks and major robberies have been reported within days. The frequency and severity of the cases have intensified scrutiny of the government’s ability to maintain law and order.
The incidents span both urban and rural areas, suggesting that the concern is not confined to a single locality. In Tiruvallur, a 33-year-old man was allegedly attacked and killed by a five-member gang following what police suspect was a relationship-related dispute. The victim was returning home after complying with bail conditions when his motorcycle was reportedly rammed by the attackers. Several suspects were subsequently arrested.
Another murder in Kelambakkam involved a 26-year-old history-sheeter who was found dead at a cremation ground. Police are investigating whether the killing was connected to a previous dispute involving another criminal associate. The case highlights the continuing presence of organised local rivalries and repeat offenders in parts of the State.
The most shocking case emerged from Salem, where chopped body parts of an unidentified woman were discovered inside gunny bags placed in overhead water tanks. Police and forensic teams were called in, while CCTV footage and fingerprints are being examined. Investigators have also questioned several people as they attempt to establish the woman’s identity and reconstruct the circumstances surrounding her death.
In Thiruneermalai, a local functionary of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi was allegedly hacked to death by a group of six men. The attackers reportedly arrived on motorcycles, assaulted the victim with sickles and escaped. Police suspect previous enmity as a possible motive and are examining CCTV footage.
Tirunelveli witnessed another exceptionally violent killing when a 41-year-old man with a long criminal record was allegedly murdered following a financial dispute. Police arrested a couple in connection with the case and are investigating whether others were involved. In another incident in the same district, a man was reportedly intercepted in broad daylight, hacked repeatedly and beheaded. The attackers allegedly carried the severed head some distance before abandoning it near a temple junction. Police are probing several possible motives, including earlier personal and local disputes. These cases add to the growing concerns surrounding the TVK Model.
Violence has not been limited to disputes involving known criminals. In Cuddalore district, a man associated with the We The Leaders organisation was allegedly attacked after questioning people who were consuming alcohol on a street. He survived the assault and was taken to hospital, while police arrested five people in connection with the incident.
In Kallakurichi, the killing of a 75-year-old woman has raised another serious concern: the vulnerability of elderly citizens. The woman was reportedly found dead in an agricultural field after suffering severe injuries. Police discovered that gold jewellery she had been wearing was missing, leading investigators to suspect robbery as the motive. Forensic personnel were deployed and a suspect was taken in for questioning.
The pattern extends beyond murders. Police have also reported a series of chain-snatching and robbery cases across Tamil Nadu. In Kolathur, two men were arrested for allegedly stealing an eight-sovereign gold chain from a 63-year-old woman. In Vandalur, a government schoolteacher was reportedly followed and robbed of her gold chain near a railway station. Vellore police arrested two youths accused of snatching a ten-sovereign chain from a woman near the Christian Medical College area.
The scale of one robbery in Paramathi Velur was particularly striking. A gang allegedly entered the home of a jaggery trader and his wife, restrained the couple and escaped with around 40 sovereigns of jewellery and ₹40 lakh in cash. Police are examining forensic evidence and CCTV recordings as part of the investigation. Such incidents inevitably raise questions about whether criminal networks are becoming increasingly confident. That is an uncomfortable challenge for the TVK Model.
For the government, the political stakes are significant. Vijay built much of his political appeal by portraying himself as an alternative to established parties and by promising stronger governance. Law and order is therefore not merely another administrative department; it is central to the credibility of that promise.
At the same time, individual criminal cases should not automatically be treated as proof of a statewide administrative collapse. Murders can arise from personal enmity, financial disputes, criminal rivalries and other motives, while police investigations often take time to establish responsibility. Arrests in several of these cases also indicate that the police machinery is actively responding.
Nevertheless, the sheer brutality of the recent incidents deserves sustained public attention. Citizens ultimately judge governments not only by welfare announcements or political messaging but by whether they feel secure while travelling, working, returning home or simply going about their daily lives.
The TVK Model will therefore face a practical test in the streets rather than on political platforms. The government will need to demonstrate that policing remains effective, that repeat offenders are closely monitored, that investigations move swiftly and that vulnerable citizens are adequately protected.
Ultimately, the question is straightforward: can the administration translate its promises of a safer Tamil Nadu into a reality that ordinary people can actually feel? The answer will depend not on slogans, but on whether violence is contained, criminals are brought to justice and public confidence in the State’s law-and-order machinery is restored.
