Ranabaali is a Telugu period action drama directed by Rahul Sankrityan. It is set during British rule between 1854 and 1878. The story centres on the Great Famine. Vijay Deverakonda plays a Rayalaseema man who watches drought, grain exports and official indifference hollow out his region, and who answers with organised resistance rather than surrender. Rashmika Mandanna plays his wife, Jayamma, a partner in the fight rather than a bystander. Hollywood actor Arnold Vosloo plays the antagonist, Sir Theodore Hector.

The film opens worldwide on October 16, in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada, during the Dasara festival window, one of the strongest holiday periods for Telugu cinema.

Why people are talking about it

The couple. It is the first film to feature the two stars together since their wedding on February 26 in Udaipur. Fans had followed their pairing since Geetha Govindam and Dear Comrade, and the wedding ended years of speculation. The film reunites them after six years.

The scale and subject. A rebellion against colonial rule during a famine is the kind of material that has done well with audiences, and the film carries music by Ajay-Atul and a multilingual release.

The open question. The buzz is not all one-way. Reports on US premiere advance bookings put them around $50K, far below the $930K for his earlier film Kingdom. Trade analysts see the festival release as the chance to change that. The film has not yet opened, so how it does remains to be seen.

Why South Indian cinema is getting fresh attention across India

South Indian films have spent several years proving they can travel beyond their home states, and the pattern is worth looking at in detail.

RRR (2022, Telugu): S.S. Rajamouli’s epic about two freedom fighters rests on friendship and sacrifice. Its emotional core carried cross-cultural appeal beyond the action, and its global success permanently raised the international standing of South Indian cinema. The song “Naatu Naatu” went on to win the Oscar for Best Original Song. The film earned ₹277 crore net in Hindi alone.

Kantara (2022, Kannada): Rishab Shetty’s film about a village, its guardian spirit and a conflict over forest land treats tradition, nature and community as things worth protecting. It was made on a budget of ₹16 crore and earned ₹309 crore. A commentator noted that unlike mass entertainers such as KGF or Pushpa, it thrives on unique storytelling, cultural rootedness and mysticism. Its prequel carried the idea further. Kantara A Legend: Chapter 1 was the second-highest grosser of 2025, with $80 million.

Pushpa 2 and KGF 2: These are action spectacles rather than message films, but they changed the market. Pushpa 2 opened with a record ₹70 crore in Hindi alone. KGF Chapter 2 earned ₹434.62 crore net in Hindi. Yash summed up the shift by saying that a film made in Mumbai is now simply an Indian film, not a Hindi one.

Malayalam and Tamil films: From my own knowledge, Jai Bhim (Tamil) used courtroom drama to highlight custodial abuse and tribal rights, and Malayalam hits like Manjummel Boys won audiences through friendship and survival. Malayalam cinema doubled its share of the box office in 2024, from 5% to 10%.

The honest picture

The attention is real, but the numbers show a more mixed picture than the headlines. In 2025, the combined share of the four South Indian industries slipped from 48% to 44%, and the share of Hindi-dubbed South films fell to 7% from 31%. Analysts attribute the cooling to a string of underperforming big-ticket releases. A lineup that includes Allu Arjun, Prabhas and Mahesh Babu is expected to bring back the pan-India momentum.

That is also why Ranabaali is being watched closely. The films that last tend to be the ones with a rooted story and something to say, like RRR and Kantara. If Ranabaali works, it will be because the audience connects with its story of resistance as well as its stars.
