Congress Turns to Communist Leaders as Questions Grow Over Its Treatment of Veteran Organisers
Share on FacebookShare on X
The Congress party’s growing engagement with Communist student leaders has raised questions about its political priorities, organisational strategy and relationship with its traditional leadership. The emergence of Neha Bora, national president of the All India Students’ Association (AISA), alongside Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra during the Opposition’s October 12 march towards the Supreme Court, has drawn attention to the party’s willingness to elevate leaders from outside its own organisational structure. The development invites scrutiny of how Congress balances established leaders with new political allies.

Bora’s growing visibility is not an isolated development. AISA, the student wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, has become increasingly prominent in protests involving opposition parties and youth-led movements. Her presence alongside senior Congress leaders during the march against alleged irregularities in electoral rolls illustrates how student activists are being incorporated into wider Opposition campaigns. The question is whether this cooperation represents a temporary arrangement or a more consequential shift in the Congress leadership’s political calculations.

For decades, Congress relied on its state-level leaders, grassroots organisers and established political networks to mobilise voters. Figures who built their influence through years of organisational work were central to the party’s electoral machinery. However, the leadership’s preference for highly visible national campaigns and alliances with ideologically distinct groups has prompted questions about whether the party is adequately recognising its own organisational experience.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar offers an important example in this discussion. A formidable Congress organiser, Shivakumar has spent years building political networks and strengthening the party’s position in Karnataka. His organisational skills have made him an influential figure within the state unit. Nevertheless, the suggestion that he is being deliberately sidelined requires evidence beyond political speculation. He was among the Congress leaders participating in the recent Opposition march, and his presence complicates any simplistic narrative of exclusion.

Yet the contrast between established political machinery and the growing prominence of a Communist student activist remains politically significant. For Congress, bringing younger activists into its campaigns can generate publicity, attract politically engaged youth and broaden the appeal of its protests. It can also help connect electoral issues with concerns about unemployment, educational opportunities and democratic accountability. These are legitimate objectives for a party seeking to expand its support base.

The difficulty lies in ensuring that such partnerships strengthen rather than undermine the party’s own organisational foundations. A Communist student organisation operates within a distinct ideological tradition, with its own political history, priorities and cadre networks. Cooperation over a common issue does not automatically mean ideological agreement, but repeated public appearances alongside Congress leaders can create the impression of a closer political relationship.

Neha Bora’s rise also highlights the changing character of Opposition politics. A Communist student leader can acquire national visibility through demonstrations, social media and participation in coordinated campaigns without holding an elected legislative position. For established political parties, such activists can provide energy and public attention that conventional party structures sometimes struggle to generate. Their influence, however, must ultimately be assessed through sustained political participation rather than a few prominent appearances.

There is another question Congress cannot afford to ignore: what message does this strategy send to its own workers? If a Communist activist receives a prominent platform while long-serving Congress organisers believe their contributions are overlooked, dissatisfaction could grow within the party. That is a potential organisational risk, not proof that the leadership has intentionally discriminated against its veterans. Political parties must communicate clearly with their cadres if alliances are not to become sources of internal resentment.

At the same time, Congress has a legitimate reason to work with ideologically different organisations when they share a specific political objective. Opposition unity often requires compromise, and democratic politics does not demand complete ideological agreement before cooperation becomes possible. The presence of a Communist leader at a joint protest, therefore, should not automatically be interpreted as evidence that Congress has abandoned its own political identity.

The real test will be whether these partnerships deliver durable political gains, strengthen the party’s grassroots network and provide meaningful opportunities for its established workers. A Communist activist’s prominence may generate headlines, but headlines alone cannot substitute for organisation, electoral credibility and public trust.

Ultimately, Congress must decide whether its engagement with emerging student leaders is part of a coherent strategy or simply another episode in its search for political momentum. Its veteran organisers and newer allies need not be competitors. If the party manages the relationship intelligently, both can contribute to a broader Opposition movement. If it fails, perceptions of unequal treatment could deepen internal tensions and distract from the issues it seeks to raise. The challenge is not choosing between generations or ideologies; it is building a political coalition without weakening the organisation at its core.

Editorial note: The article is based on the reported October 12 Opposition march and Neha Bora’s participation. Contemporary reporting identifies Bora as AISA’s national president and AISA as the student wing of CPI(ML) Liberation. D.K. Shivakumar also participated in the march, so the article treats claims that he is being sidelined as an interpretation rather than an established fact.
