The phrase ‘Hindu Taliban’ has become the centre of a fresh media controversy after a discussion published by The Indian Express examined the Vishva Hindu Parishad’s (VHP) reported call to restrict Muslim participation in Navaratri and Garba events. The programme, as described by OpIndia in its September 23 report, featured journalist Shubhangi Khapre interviewing journalist and author Girish Kuber, with the conversation focusing on whether religious celebrations that have acquired a large public and commercial character should be open to people outside the faith.
According to OpIndia’s account, Khapre referred to the VHP position as a “fatwa” and questioned whether such a restriction was justified. Kuber responded that he considered the proposal objectionable and asked whether the VHP was becoming a “Hindu Taliban”. The expression became the most contentious part of the discussion because it framed an internal debate over access to Hindu religious events through a comparison with a term associated with the Taliban’s theocratic rule in Afghanistan.
The controversy is rooted in a broader disagreement over the character of Navaratri celebrations. Modern Garba and Dandiya events can combine religious observance, music, dance, entertainment and commercial ticketing. The VHP’s reported position, however, treats at least some such programmes primarily as Hindu religious gatherings and argues that organisers should be able to determine who participates. Critics take the opposite view, maintaining that large public celebrations have developed into community events and should not exclude people solely because of their religion.
OpIndia strongly criticised The Indian Express discussion, arguing that describing the VHP as ‘Hindu Taliban’ unfairly demonises a Hindu organisation. The publication also disputed the suggestion that Navaratri celebrations become secular merely because they attract large crowds, performers and paying attendees. Its report stressed that Garba and Dandiya have religious associations and are performed in connection with devotion to Hindu deities.
The ‘Hindu Taliban’ label has therefore become a focal point in a debate that is larger than one television or digital discussion. Supporters of the VHP’s reported restriction can view religious celebrations as spaces where a community should retain control over participation, particularly when organisers believe that the event has a specific religious purpose. Opponents can argue that once such celebrations are conducted as large public programmes, questions of inclusion, access and equal treatment naturally arise.
Kuber also questioned the distinction between religious and cultural celebrations by referring to examples involving Christmas, Diwali, music and popular culture. He argued, according to OpIndia, that Hindu festivals have increasingly become public and commercial occasions and therefore questioned why participation should be restricted on religious grounds. The comparison prompted a counterargument from OpIndia that the popularity of a religious festival does not erase its religious identity.
The ‘Hindu Taliban’ controversy also highlights a difficult question for organisers and governments: where should the boundary lie between private religious observance and public cultural events? A temple ceremony, a community-only religious programme, a ticketed Garba night and a municipal celebration may all involve the same festival while operating under very different practical circumstances. Whether restrictions are lawful or appropriate can depend on the ownership of the venue, the nature of the event, applicable rules and the manner in which access is regulated.
The discussion also drew attention to demands for government intervention. OpIndia reported that Khapre and Kuber appealed to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the state government to address the issue. Such calls raise another question: whether a government should intervene in disputes between private organisers and prospective participants, or whether those decisions should ordinarily remain with organisers subject to existing law.
The ‘Hindu Taliban’ phrase has consequently shifted attention from the original dispute to the language used to describe it. For supporters of the VHP position, the episode is evidence that Hindu religious autonomy is often treated differently from other forms of community identity. For critics, the controversy illustrates concerns about religious exclusion from events that have become significant parts of public cultural life. These are competing interpretations rather than settled facts.
At its core, the dispute involves several separate questions that are sometimes merged together: what constitutes a religious event, who owns or controls a venue, whether organisers may set participation rules, and when such rules become discriminatory under applicable law. The answers cannot necessarily be determined by political labels alone.
The ‘Hindu Taliban’ debate is likely to continue as Navaratri approaches and public celebrations become more prominent. What remains clear from the controversy is that the intersection of religious freedom, cultural participation and private event management can produce sharp disagreements in a diverse society. The immediate argument may concern Garba and Navaratri, but the principles being debated extend to many other religious and cultural gatherings across India.
