Kerala’s media space is once again facing uncomfortable questions over freedom of expression after BIG TV deleted a debate concerning controversial remarks attributed to prominent Islamic scholar Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar and subsequently issued an apology. The programme, part of the channel’s Big Dialogue series, had featured anchor Aparna Kurup questioning the reported views on women’s participation in public life. Its removal has now triggered a wider debate over whether media organisations can withstand organised pressure when religious sensitivities are involved.
The controversy erupted after Kanthapuram reportedly made remarks advocating restrictions on women’s presence in public programmes alongside men. The comments sparked criticism, particularly because they appeared to place limitations on women’s participation in public life on the basis of religious considerations.
Rather than allowing the ensuing disagreement to remain within the realm of public debate, the controversy escalated around the television programme itself. During the discussion, Kurup openly challenged the reported position, questioning the logic of confining women to the domestic sphere and objecting to restrictions on their participation in society.
That intervention subsequently drew strong reactions from sections of the Islamist community, according to the report published by The Commune. What followed has become the more significant part of the controversy: BIG TV removed the programme from its social media platforms and issued an apology.
In an apology dated September 1, Kurup expressed regret over remarks made during the discussion and said that certain comments should have been avoided. She also apologised if anything said during the programme had hurt religious sentiments or beliefs. The episode was thus not merely taken down; the channel publicly sought to distance itself from the controversy.
The decision has raised an obvious question: if a public statement concerning women’s rights and their role in society can be discussed on television, why should the discussion itself disappear when objections emerge? For critics, the deletion represents a troubling precedent. It suggests that the boundaries of permissible debate may be determined not by editorial standards or facts, but by the intensity of pressure brought to bear on a media organisation.
At the same time, BIG TV maintained that it supports equality and social justice for women regardless of their religion. That assertion, however, sits uneasily alongside the withdrawal of a programme precisely because it challenged a controversial position concerning women.
The controversy has assumed an even more serious dimension following allegations of protests and attacks targeting some BIG TV offices in the Malabar region. Such claims require independent verification and should not be treated as established fact without corroboration. Nevertheless, if journalists or media organisations were subjected to intimidation because a presenter questioned remarks made by a religious figure, it would represent a far more serious threat to democratic discourse than the original television disagreement.
Freedom of expression does not mean that every statement made on television is beyond criticism. Viewers, religious organisations and political groups have every right to challenge a programme, complain about its content or demand accountability. But there is a crucial difference between criticism and coercion. A healthy democracy depends on disagreements being answered with arguments rather than pressure.
The BIG TV controversy also exposes a recurring dilemma for Indian media: how far should editorial independence bend in the face of religious sensitivities? News organisations must certainly exercise responsibility when discussing faith and community issues. But responsibility cannot become a convenient justification for avoiding difficult questions altogether.
There is an additional irony. Removing a controversial programme rarely makes the controversy disappear. In the digital age, deleted videos can be discussed, reproduced and circulated elsewhere. A programme that might otherwise have faded from public attention can acquire greater visibility precisely because it was taken down.
For BIG TV, the episode therefore represents a significant editorial test. The channel has attempted to calm the immediate storm through an apology and withdrawal, while simultaneously reiterating its commitment to equality. Whether that approach succeeds in restoring confidence among viewers remains to be seen.
The larger issue, however, extends well beyond one television channel or one religious figure. If discussions about women’s rights, gender equality and public participation become effectively off-limits whenever influential groups object, democratic debate itself suffers.
The controversy leaves behind an uncomfortable question for Kerala’s media establishment: should journalists retreat when their questions provoke anger, or should controversial claims be examined more rigorously precisely because they are controversial? BIG TV has chosen retreat in this instance. Whether that decision brings an end to the dispute—or instead fuels a much larger argument about media freedom—may ultimately depend on how Kerala’s viewers, journalists and civil society respond.
