But fast forward to July 2025, and the transformation could not be more striking. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was welcomed in Malé with full honours, traditional music, chants of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”, and a ceremonial embrace from the very president who once championed anti-India sentiment.
From trending hashtags to red carpet treatment, this dramatic turnaround is not mere diplomacy it is a resounding testament to India’s rising global stature and the political, economic, and cultural weight it carries under Modi’s leadership. India’s strong civilisational ethos, strategic patience, and firm diplomacy have yielded results once again.
Modi in Maldives: A Grand Welcome and Diplomatic Reset
Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Malé on July 25 for a crucial two-day visit, marking his first trip to the island nation since President Muizzu took office in November 2023. Modi was received at Velana International Airport by Muizzu himself, accompanied by top Maldivian ministers including those for defence, foreign affairs, homeland security, and finance.
The invitation to PM Modi to be the Guest of Honour at the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations was not just ceremonial—it was symbolic. The Maldives also marks 60 years of diplomatic relations with India, making this visit especially meaningful. It’s also the first state visit hosted by President Muizzu during his tenure, signalling a complete reset in bilateral ties.
The grand reception, lined with traditional Maldivian performers and the Indian diaspora waving flags and chanting patriotic slogans, stood in stark contrast to the hostility of the recent past. What changed? The answer lies in New Delhi’s consistent diplomacy and unmatched civilisational depth.
India-Maldives Partnership Strengthens: Strategic Deals and Economic Boost
On the first day of his visit, PM Modi and President Muizzu held wide-ranging talks covering trade, infrastructure, maritime security, and defence cooperation. In a landmark announcement, negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the Maldives were launched—ushering in a new era of economic connectivity.
India also extended a fresh Line of Credit (LoC) worth ₹4,850 crore ($565 million) to the Maldives. In a further gesture of goodwill, India agreed to reduce the Maldives’ annual debt repayment obligations by 40% on Government of India-funded projects.
Seven key MoUs were signed, spanning areas like fisheries, meteorology, Indian UPI integration, pharmaceuticals, and digital infrastructure. The leaders also jointly inaugurated several India-assisted projects:
A new Maldives Defence Ministry building,
3,300 housing units in Hulhumale,
Road and drainage infrastructure in Addu City, and
72 vehicles and equipment for the Maldivian Defence Forces.
