How PM Modi Is Blueprinting a New BJP to Tackle the Gen Z Disconnect

During a intense five-hour session with newly appointed national office-bearers under party President Nitin Nabin, PM Modi put his team through a test of intellectual agility

How PM Modi Is Blueprinting a New BJP to Tackle the Gen Z Disconnect
Share on FacebookShare on X
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is executing a deliberate strategy to reshape the Bharatiya BJP, aiming to construct a forward-looking political machinery that can directly speak to India’s dynamic Gen Z demographic. But a recent high-stakes internal session revealed just how wide the gap remains between the party’s legacy leadership style and the modern vision required to engage young, hyper-connected citizens.
During a intense five-hour session with newly appointed national office-bearers under party President Nitin Nabin, PM Modi put his team through a test of intellectual agility. Rather than delivering a top-down speech, he tasked leaders with articulating key moments of inspiration from their political careers. The outcome was stark: less than two percent of responses met the Prime Minister’s bar for strategic depth, as many defaulted to routine personal stories rather than high-level organizational insights.

Expressing clear disappointment, PM Modi noted that only 2 percent of the attendees delivered answers with real substance. He urged the team to move beyond superficial accounts and focus on developing a broader, more perceptive understanding of global and national events.

With millions of Gen Z voters entering the political arena—a generation shaped by rapid digital transformations, real-time news cycles, and complex global realities—the Prime Minister’s intention for his party was that it go beyond traditional political rhetoric to build lasting trust.

The Strategy to Capture the Next-Gen Mindset

  • Transitioning from Rhetoric to Substance: PM Modi stressed that engaging Gen Z requires a sophisticated understanding of macro-level trends. Referencing ongoing global shifts in places like Gaza and Iran, he urged leaders to sharpen their analytical capabilities, ensuring party messaging connects regional concerns with global perspectives.
  • The ‘Sushma Swaraj’ Standard for Public Relations: Pointing to the late Sushma Swaraj, PM Modi urged leaders to step away from chasing reactive media moments and sensational headline-grabbing. To connect with a discerning younger demographic, leaders were instructed to speak only after thorough preparation, offering depth over soundbites.
  • Strict Internal Discipline: To build a disciplined, highly functional modern political organization, PM Modi issued a firm warning against leaking internal discussions, framing organizational secrecy as vital for maintaining strategic focus.
The session sent a clear directive throughout the party infrastructure: winning over Gen Z demands more than routine grassroots work—it requires disciplined, media-savvy, and intellect-driven leadership capable of matching the pace of a changing India.
