The 3 Actors who deserve a National Award for their Fantastic Roles
Share on FacebookShare on X

This was the year of Bollywood, with earth shattering hits like Animal, Jawan, Pathan and Sunny Deol’s monumental comeback Gadar 2. But this was also a year of numerous heart touching performances and plots that touched viewers deeply. From commercial successes to critically acclaimed films, we saw it all. However, there were three such films that deserved special recognition as the lead actors delivered impeccable performances, leaving the audience in an awe. Vikrant Massey’s 12th fail, Vicky Kaushal’s Sam Bahadur and Abhishek Bachchan’s Ghoomer and were some outstanding movies that people should have praised a little more. The lead actor’s’ portrayal of characters and the ability to portray depth and emotions in such a charming way has won critics’ hearts and this is the reason why these three actors deserve to win a national award.

Starting with Vicky Kaushal, his portrayal of Sam Manekshaw in “Sam Bahadur” is nothing short of extraordinary, showcasing his versatility as an actor. Critics have noted that in a film that leans towards being excessively declamatory, Kaushal stands out, delivering a performance that captures the charisma, determination, and wit of the legendary Field Marshal. Kaushal embodies the multifaceted personality of Sam Manekshaw, transitioning from the winsome cadet at the Military Academy to the courageous strategist during the 1971 war. His portrayal beautifully captures the nuances of Manekshaw’s character, from the charismatic charm that earned him adoration to the decisive leadership that shaped crucial moments in Indian military history.

What sets Kaushal apart is his ability to convey the emotional depth of the character, making the audience feel the weight of Manekshaw’s responsibilities and the impact of his decisions. His expressions and commanding screen presence breathe life into the iconic military figure, making every scene he inhabits compelling and resonant.

In a film where the background music tends to overpower significant events, Kaushal’s performance remains a constant, commanding attention and anchoring the narrative. This portrayal undoubtedly stands as one of his most challenging roles, demonstrating not only his acting prowess but also his dedication to bringing historical figures to life with authenticity. Vicky Kaushal’s stellar performance in “Sam Bahadur” is deserving of accolades, and a national award would only be a fitting recognition of his outstanding contribution to the film.

Talking of Vikrant Massey’s performance in “12th Fail” showcases his dedication and versatility as an actor, earning him recognition and perhaps even a National Award. His portrayal of Manoj Kumar Sharma, a young Chambal boy aspiring to become an IPS officer, goes beyond the superficial, as Massey goes to great lengths to authentically embody the character.

12th Fail Review - Rediff.com

Massey’s commitment is evident in the physical transformation he underwent for the role, losing weight and altering his appearance to convincingly portray a 19-year-old at the age of 36. The actor’s willingness to embrace the challenges of the character is commendable, including enduring a strict diet of semi-liquid and mashed food for over 20 days.

Furthermore, Massey’s revelation of contracting a skin illness during the process highlights the lengths he went to for the authenticity of his character. The fact that director Vidhu Vinod Chopra chose to shoot 80% of the film in sequence adds to the complexity of Massey’s task, requiring him to regain lost weight during the shoot.

Massey’s commitment to his craft, physical transformations, and the challenges he faced make him a strong contender for national recognition, solidifying his position as an actor of substance and dedication in the industry.

On another note, Abhishek Bachchan’s performance in ‘Ghoomer’ is perhaps the most deserving of a National Award for his powerful portrayal of a whacky coach navigating personal and professional challenges. His versatility shines as he guides Saiyami Kher’s character through a transformative journey, from a promising batter to an innovative spinner. Bachchan’s portrayal of a troubled, tormented soul is mesmerizing, with a nuanced depiction of inner demons. The film reaches its peak during his impactful monologue, unraveling the complexities of his character’s life. In the monologue where he expertly dissects winners, losers and magic and when he says “Ek baar Magic feel karna hai” is when Abhishek Bachchan turns into an acting talent that Bollywood has criminally underutilized partly because of his Megastar’s son’s status.

Ghoomer Movie Review | दिल को छू देने वाली क्रिकेटर की कहानी, जाने पूरा रिव्यू | Great Story - filmytalkie

Bachchan seamlessly evolves into a refined coach, and every detail of this transformation is authentically portrayed. In fact Abhishek is so powerful as the eccentric coach Paddy that his illustrious father Amitabh Bachchan’s cameo seems trivial, even unrequired. ‘Ghoomer’ marks a milestone in Abhishek’s career, showcasing his remarkable journey to brilliance. And that journey has milestones like Yuva, Guru, Daswee and Bob Biswas.

People on X (formerly twitter), have been praising the movie ever since it released. A user said- “Ghoomer is a masterpiece and Abhishek Bachchan’s performance elevates it to another level”. With its genuine depiction of human emotions, supported by a strong cast, ‘Ghoomer’ stands out as a compelling narrative, making Abhishek Bachchan worthy of a National Award.

In a year full of great Bollywood movies, Vicky Kaushal in “Sam Bahadur,” Vikrant Massey in “12th Fail,” and Abhishek Bachchan in ‘Ghoomer’ shine as top-notch performers. These actors, with their genuine and dedicated acting, bring characters that deeply connect with the audience. Each deserves recognition, maybe a National Award, for their excellent contributions to Indian cinema.

Looking back at a year filled with fantastic acting, these actors’ ability to make their roles come alive is proof of their skills, making the film scene richer with unforgettable stories.
