Balkampet Yellamma Pochamma Temple- Overview

Balkampet Yellamma Pochamma Temple is one of the famous temples in Telangana. It is in the city of Hyderabad and is famous for the Bonalu Jatara. Bonalu is the most popular festival in Hyderabad and Telangana. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Yellamma.

Yellamma literally means “Mother of the Universe” and that is exactly how the goddess is regarded. Jaggadamba is also an alternate name for the goddess. She is also considered as Goddess Renuka by some legends.

Balkampet Yellamma Pochamma Temple opens from 6:00am to 1:00pm in the morning and from 3:00pm to 8:00pm in the evening.

History of this Temple

The history of Balkampet Yellamma Pochamma Temple dates to the 15^th century and is considered to be one of the ancient temples of Hyderabad and Telangana. The temple has undergone a lot of renovation over the course of time. The present form of the temple was renovated in the beginning of the 20^th century.

Interestingly, the idol of the goddess is 10 feet deep from the ground level. There is also a well in the Balakampet Yellamma temple complex and some devotees believe that the water in the well cures all diseases. Hence, taking a bath here gives you freedom from all disorders and skin diseases. This holy water is called ‘Teertham.’

An Akhand Jyot is also present in the temple which was lit during the renovation. The temple complex also includes temples dedicated to many other deities like Sri Pochamma, Rajarajeshwari, Nagadevata, Ganesha.

Place to visit near this Temple

Alampur

It is one of the famous places to visit in Telangana. This place has a large number of temples in Telangana and has great religious significance. This place is just 218 km from Hyderabad and 22 km from Kurnool. Jogulamba Temple, Navabrahma Temple and Sangameshwara Temple can be seen at this place. All the temples here have inscriptions from the 7^th and 16^th centuries. Alampur is situated on the banks of the Tungabhadra River and has been ruled by many famous dynasties of the Satavahanas, Chalukyas, Kakatiyas, Bahmani Sultans and Vijayanagara kings.

The forests of Ananthagiri are famous for the Ananth Padmanabha Swami Temple built by the Nizam Nawabs 400 years ago. A little far from the temple There is a temple of Lord Shiva. The main temple of Ananthagiri is built around a cave. There is also trekking facility for the adventure lovers.

By Road- Balakampet Temple, located close to Ameerpet-SR Nagar, is in the heart of Hyderabad city and is easily accessible by road. Here you can reach easily with you own vehicle as its roads are well connected with different cities of the country.
