The Indian entertainment industry is going through a churning phase. The audience has shown the Bollywood cabals their rightful place. Content driven cinema is finally getting their due recognition. Irrespective of language/region/genre, quality content is rocking at the box office. The prime example of this churning is that ‘star’ driven ‘Lal Singh Chaddha’ has tanked miserably. Contrary to that, Telugu movie ‘Karthikeya 2’ is witnessing exponential growth courtesy of its approach and the content delivery. Amid all of this, RRR is coming out as the flag bearer of this change. There is a high possibility that it might script history on the global stage.
Global success of RRR
After ruling the heart of Indian audiences, RRR is becoming a global phenomenon. It shattered the record for the highest opening day grosser by an Indian film. It made a business of around Rs 240 crores worldwide on its first day. Overall, the movie earned around Rs 1100 crores at the global box office.

Later, it became a smashing hit at OTT platform. In May, the Hindi version of the movie was released on Netflix. It soon landed in the top 10 most-watched titles over the platform. This created a strong buzz in the global media. They are going gaga over the film and heaping praises. Some of them are claiming that RRR is a strong contender to lift next year’s Oscars in multiple categories.
Global media goes Gaga for RRR
Recently, a popular American media company, Variety, released their prediction list for Oscars 2023. It claimed that RRR checks all the boxes needed for an Oscar worthy movie. It has named popular Indian actor Jr. NTR as a probable contender in the Best Actor category. Along with it, the media company strongly feels that RRR can get several nominations in the Oscars.

It has given a list of categories in which it feels that RRR will give a tough fight to other films. It predicted that the film can win more than one final nomination. It is important to note that only five movies from around the globe make it to the final list. It has predicted that RRR can get a final nomination in 2023 Academy Awards aka Oscars in following categories – Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best original screenplay, Best Adapted Screenplay.
India’s chances at the Oscar
Evidently, Lagaan in 2001 was the last Indian movie that made it to the final nomination list. Till now, only three Indian movies have got this opportunity. Other than Lagaan, it was Mother India in 1957 and Salaam Bombay! in 1988. Last year, India’s official submission “Pebbles” failed to make into the list of films recognized for international feature. This year was the 20th straight year when an Indian movie didn’t make it to the final nomination list. Hence, it will be a huge feat if RRR indeed gets to the final list ending 21 years of drought.
There is a strong push to send Telugu language for Oscars this year. There is a high chance that it can make it to the final nominations in the International film category.
It is important that India and producers of RRR provide financial capital for movies’ campaigns for the Oscar nomination. In December, a shortlist of 15 international features will be announced till then India has to lobby for the movie strongly to end this streak.

However, media buzz claims that Indian Film Fraternity may send The Kashmir Files as the official nomination from India. Even after that, RRR can still make it to the list.
The publication said “Even if India doesn’t select it (RRR), it can still be submitted in all other general categories, including best picture and director”.
Other Global Nominations for RRR
Apart from Variety, the Saturn Awards revealed nominations for their 50th-anniversary edition. RRR has got multiple nominations for this American Award. The winners of the award will be announced on 25th of October in a live-stream. The award is presented annually by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films.
Additionally, RRR became the first Indian film to get nominated at Hollywood Critics Association Awards. It left behind popular Hollywood movies like Top Gun: Maverick, The Batman & Elvis among others to secure the second spot in the list. The nominations at Hollywood Critics Association Awards include Best Action/Adventure Film, Best Direction & Best International Film.
SS Rajamouli directed magnus opus RRR has become a phenomenon in itself. Five months have passed since its release yet it is only seeing a meteoric rise. If this prediction of Variety and other global media comes true, RRR might script history at the Oscars and other global awards. This will set a great template that without compromising on the Indianness, a movie can become a massive success.
