Mumbai witnessed an emotional farewell as the final rites of legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle were conducted with full state honours at Shivaji Park crematorium. The iconic voice of Indian cinema, who died on 12th April, at the age of 92, was honoured with a ceremonial police salute as admirers, family members, and leading figures from the worlds of sport, cinema, and music gathered to pay their last respects.

Bhosle had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai after suffering from a chest infection and exhaustion. She died due to multi-organ failure, bringing to a close one of the most remarkable musical journeys in Indian history.

Her mortal remains were placed in a glass casket draped in the Indian tricolour and adorned with white lilies, symbolising national respect for a voice that shaped the soundscape of Indian cinema for more than eight decades. Earlier in the day, mourners gathered at her residence, Casa Grande in Lower Parel, where admirers were allowed to offer their final respects before the funeral procession moved to Shivaji Park in Dadar. The cremation was scheduled for 4 pm.

Celebrities gather to honour a timeless voice

Several prominent personalities were present to bid farewell to the legendary singer. Among those who arrived at the funeral were cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar, actors Tabu and Riteish Deshmukh, veteran actor Asha Parekh, singer Javed Ali, and musicians Neil Nitin Mukesh and Nitin Mukesh.

Many were seen interacting with the grieving family and offering condolences, reflecting the immense respect Bhosle commanded across generations of artists. Throughout the day, tributes continued to pour in from across the film fraternity and beyond.

Messages of condolence were shared by several leading figures in Indian cinema, including actors Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Chiranjeevi, along with veteran star Hema Malini and filmmaker Karan Johar. Many remembered her as a voice that transcended generations and genres.

A remarkable coincidence in the Mangeshkar legacy

As tributes poured in, some observers noted a striking coincidence surrounding the deaths of Bhosle and her elder sister, legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar. The two sisters, who dominated the Indian music industry for decades, both passed away at the age of 92 at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, and both deaths occurred on a Sunday.

Born in 1929, Lata Mangeshkar was four years older than Bhosle, who was born in 1933. The elder sister died in 2022, exactly four years before Bhosle’s passing in 2026. Despite long-standing speculation about rivalry between the two, both singers had repeatedly dismissed such claims in interviews.

A voice that shaped Indian music

Born as Asha Mangeshkar in the village of Goar in Sangli district of Maharashtra, Bhosle grew up in a musical household led by her father, Deenanath Mangeshkar. Over a career spanning more than eight decades, she recorded over 12,500 songs in multiple languages and became one of the most versatile voices in Indian music.

Her repertoire ranged across film songs, ghazals, classical compositions, pop numbers, bhajans, and cabaret tracks. She famously lent her voice to many iconic actresses, including Meena Kumari, Madhubala, and Zeenat Aman, and later to stars such as Kajol and Urmila Matondkar.

Her songs also became synonymous with the screen presence of dancer Helen, for whom she delivered several unforgettable performances.

Over the decades, Bhosle received numerous honours, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan. With her passing, India loses not just a singer but a voice that defined the emotional memory of generations.
