One Year of Altcoin ETFs: Inflows vs Price for Every Spot Fund
Share on FacebookShare on X

A year ago, most American investors who wanted Solana or XRP inside a regular brokerage account had to settle for futures products or odd fund structures. That changed on October 28, 2025, when Bitwise’s Solana Staking ETF (ticker BSOL) opened on the NYSE alongside Canary Capital’s Litecoin and HBAR funds. XRP followed on November 13, 2025. Dogecoin funds trickled in after that, and a second wave of smaller tokens showed up in 2026.

So, twelve months in, did the money arrive? Sort of. Did it lift prices? Not even close. By early October 2026, spot XRP ETFs held about $1.80 billion in cumulative net inflows and Solana funds sat near $1.59 billion, while both coins traded well below their launch-day levels.

Plenty of holders never touch an ETF at all, and that’s easy to forget when flow charts dominate the headlines. They keep SOL, XRP, or DOGE in self-custody wallets and use the coins directly, whether that means swapping on a decentralized exchange or playing at an online crypto casino like BetFury, where the token itself works as the chip. None of that activity shows up in SoSoValue’s daily ETF tables. So ETF flows measure one specific crowd (mostly advisers and institutions), not the whole market’s appetite for a coin.

How the First Spot Altcoin ETFs Reached Wall Street

The timing was strange. The first funds went live in the middle of the 43-day US government shutdown that began October 1, 2025, thanks to generic listing standards the SEC had approved for exchanges shortly before. Issuers filed final S-1 registrations and 8-A forms and let them go effective without a full staff review. (ETF lawyers had a busy month.)

The early rollout looked roughly like this:

  • October 28, 2025: Bitwise BSOL, Canary Litecoin ETF (LTCC), and Canary HBAR ETF (HBR) start trading
  • October 29, 2025: Grayscale converts its existing Solana trust into GSOL
  • November 13, 2025: Canary’s XRPC lists on Nasdaq as the first single-token spot XRP ETF
  • November 2025 onward: Dogecoin products from Grayscale (GDOG) and later 21Shares (TDOG), whose registration was declared effective on January 9, 2026

Day-one volume made it all look like a party. BSOL traded about $56 million in its first session, the busiest debut among roughly 850 US ETF launches that year, according to Bloomberg analyst Eric Balchunas. HBR managed $8 million. LTCC did $1 million. Two weeks later, XRPC nudged past BSOL with about $58 million.

Solana ETFs Kept Buying While SOL Slid

Solana’s ETF family now counts nine funds. SoSoValue figures cited by U.Today on October 7, 2026 put cumulative net inflows at about $1.59 billion, with roughly $1.93 billion in assets. Those totals look healthy until they sit next to a price chart. SOL traded near $195 on BSOL’s debut day, and on October 5, 2026 it changed hands at $120.40. That’s a drop of roughly 38% during a stretch when ETF buyers rarely stepped away.

Wait, how can assets top inflows if the price fell? It’s probably a mix of two things: staking rewards piling up inside funds like BSOL, and the legacy coins Grayscale carried over when it converted its old Solana trust (money that was already there and never counted as a fresh inflow).

October hasn’t helped. Through October 8, US Solana funds had logged a single inflow day, $1.30 million on October 2, against more than $22 million in outflows. Meanwhile the chain itself got busier, with daily active addresses climbing to about 4.27 million. Users up, fund flows down. Go figure.

Why Staking Gave Solana Funds an Edge

Bitwise built BSOL to stake 100% of its SOL, aimed for rewards around 7% a year, and waived its fee for the first three months before moving to 0.20%. That recipe pulled in the bulk of the category’s money, and 24/7 Wall St. put BSOL’s holdings at roughly $760 million by August 2026. A yield-bearing wrapper is simply an easier pitch for a financial adviser than a bare token. Think of it as owning a rented apartment versus owning the empty lot next door: both can lose value, but only one pays you while you wait. And that yield gap probably explains why some allocators chose SOL over XRP despite XRP’s bigger headline numbers.

XRP ETFs Won the Flow Race but Lost the Price Race

XRP grabbed the altcoin flow crown, and it did it fast. In fewer than 10 trading days the XRP complex gathered about $587 million, passing Solana’s month-long total. XRPC alone reported close to $250 million in first-day inflows. But XRP slipped about 3% on launch day anyway. One detail most coverage skipped helps explain that: much of the early money came through in-kind creations, where large firms hand XRP straight to the fund instead of buying it on exchanges. A record inflow, in other words, didn’t have to mean a single extra market order.

A year later, the five spot XRP ETFs hold about $1.80 billion in cumulative inflows and roughly $1.70 billion in net assets. XRP traded between $2.30 and $2.42 around XRPC’s debut and sat near $1.47 on October 7, 2026. That’s a slide of somewhere between 35% and 40%. The money kept coming, the price kept leaking, and by now nobody seems shocked.

The $8 Billion Forecast That Didn’t Happen

Before any XRP fund existed, JPMorgan (January 2025) and Standard Chartered (April 2025) both floated first-year inflow estimates as high as $8 billion. Real inflows landed at less than a quarter of that. Standard Chartered has since cut its 2026 XRP price target from $8 to $2.80.

Dogecoin, Litecoin, and HBAR Funds Stayed Tiny

Then there’s the long tail, where the numbers shrink. A lot.

Dogecoin is the funniest case. The coin has a long record of sudden meme-fueled rallies that caught the market off guard, yet its ETF wrappers never caught that energy. The whole category holds about 0.11% of DOGE’s market value, and Grayscale’s GDOG accounts for roughly 81% of the group’s assets. Its best week ever only arrived recently: $2.89 million in the week ending September 25, 2026, which landed 11 days after Bitwise said it would close its own Dogecoin fund. DOGE was trading below $0.10 at the time.

Anyone who opens the SEC filings gets a sharper picture than any flow chart offers. The 21Shares Dogecoin ETF’s quarterly report shows that on June 30, 2026 it held about 38.26 million DOGE bought for $4,239,631 and worth $2,761,751. That’s a paper loss of roughly 35% on a fund most people have never heard of.

Litecoin fared worse on attention. Canary’s LTCC went five straight sessions without a dollar of new money by November 25, 2025, and its net assets were about $6.31 million in late September 2026, close to their level in November 2025. HBR started livelier (HBAR jumped 11% on launch day, and the fund held about $74.74 million by November 10, 2025), though it hasn’t made many headlines since.

A quick tangent. The surprise of 2026 wasn’t any of these launch-day names. Zcash ETFs now hold roughly $789 million, more than Hyperliquid products at about $507 million, Chainlink at $236 million, and BNB at around $102 million. A privacy coin outpacing a household meme? Few people had that on their bingo card.

Why ETF Inflows and Altcoin Prices Drifted Apart

Flows went up and prices went down for most of the year. That feels backward, but a handful of mechanics probably explain most of it.

  • In-kind creations let big firms deliver coins they already own, so a huge inflow day can involve almost no buying on exchanges.
  • Long-time holders sold into the new demand. CryptoSlate described Solana’s early ETF money as a cushion that soaked up selling pressure without reversing the trend.
  • Bitcoin still pulls most of the institutional money, with BTC spot ETFs holding about $110.68 billion in assets and $57.84 billion in cumulative inflows.
  • In April 2026, XRP ETF assets equaled about 1.19% of XRP’s market cap, which is a pebble in a lake.

Macro mattered too. Bitcoin itself was trading around $84,100 on October 7, 2026 after another rejection near $86,000, and altcoins rarely rally when the leader is stuck.

What Year Two Could Bring for Altcoin ETF Investors

The second year probably won’t look like the first. Launch hype is gone, and the funds now have to compete on boring stuff like fees and yield. A few threads seem worth following:

  • Fee wars, since Franklin Templeton’s zero-cost XRP fund already raised the bar for rivals
  • Staking copycats trying to match BSOL’s yield pitch
  • Fund closures, because Bitwise’s planned Dogecoin exit shows that not every niche product earns its keep
  • Policy, after the Clarity Act market structure bill stalled again in September 2026

And then there’s the mood. Weekly inflows into XRP and Solana ETFs fell more than 94% in the week before October 5, 2026, while the Fear and Greed Index read 68, firmly in “Greed” territory. Nobody panicked. Buyers just stopped showing up. Is that a pause before the next leg, or the new normal for altcoin wrappers? The price charts, for once, aren’t giving away the answer.
