CJP Spokesperson Ratna Singh apologised before a Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) court in Delhi on October 21, 2026, after the Delhi Police raised concerns over her public remarks questioning the authority and neutrality of the judiciary. The development followed proceedings involving Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das, whose release came after they furnished sureties and gave undertakings concerning their future conduct. Singh’s apology has brought renewed attention to the relationship between political activism, public criticism of judicial institutions and the responsibilities of those representing political movements.

The controversy arose during the detention proceedings involving Ranka and Das. According to reports, the two leaders had been remanded to judicial custody after their sureties were rejected, prompting criticism from CJP representatives. The Delhi Police subsequently told the court that Singh had made several statements to the media that questioned the court’s authority and raised suspicions about its neutrality. Her counsel responded by assuring the court that such conduct would not be repeated. The episode highlights how statements made outside a courtroom can become relevant to proceedings when they concern the institution handling a case. <Cite refs={[“turn553132news4″,”turn553132search1”]}/>

The CJP Spokesperson had publicly criticised the SEM court on October 19, after it extended the custody of Ranka and Das by two days. Speaking to reporters, Singh argued that the system was compromised because the court had rejected the sureties presented for the two leaders. She also questioned the grounds on which their custody had been extended, alleging that procedural requirements were being used to restrict personal liberty. Singh called for the abolition of SEM courts, expressing the view that the system was failing to deliver justice in the matter.

In another media interaction, the CJP Spokesperson described the court proceedings as a “mockery” and alleged that the authorities were repeatedly finding reasons to delay the release of the detained leaders. She claimed that the hearing had been delayed and that the defence had not received satisfactory explanations for the continued custody. Singh characterised the decision as an attempt to suppress dissent and said the organisation intended to challenge it. These were her allegations about the proceedings; the court’s actions and the arguments presented by the parties must be assessed through the relevant judicial record. <Cite refs={[“turn553132news4″,”turn553132search1”]}/>

The dispute centred on the surety process, which forms part of the procedure through which a person may be released subject to specified conditions. According to reporting by The New Indian Express, the defence alleged that a surety was rejected over a mismatch in photographs, despite repeated attempts to complete the required verification. The lawyers representing Ranka and Das questioned the basis for continued detention and indicated that they would challenge the decision before a higher court. These objections formed an important part of the defence’s position, although allegations of procedural irregularities do not, by themselves, establish misconduct by judicial officials. <Cite refs={[“turn553132search1″,”turn553132news12”]}/>

For the CJP Spokesperson, the matter also became a public test of the organisation’s approach to legal institutions. Political activists and their representatives have the right to criticise judicial decisions, raise concerns about due process and pursue remedies available under the law. However, criticism of a ruling is different from making statements that may be understood as undermining a court’s authority or impartiality. Public representatives are expected to substantiate allegations and communicate their objections responsibly, particularly when a case is still being heard.

The apology also places the CJP Spokesperson controversy within a wider debate over political rhetoric and institutional accountability. Courts must remain open to legitimate scrutiny, and citizens must be able to question decisions through lawful channels. Equally, allegations that a judicial body is compromised should be supported by evidence rather than presented as established fact. The assurance given by Singh’s counsel that the conduct would not recur marks a significant development in the immediate dispute, although the available reporting does not establish that the apology amounted to an admission of every allegation raised by the police.

The case involving the CJP Spokesperson and the two detained leaders illustrates the tensions that can emerge when street-level political mobilisation intersects with legal proceedings. The release of Ranka and Das after they furnished sureties and gave undertakings brought one stage of the matter to a close, while their representatives continued to dispute aspects of the custody process. The broader questions surrounding the proceedings concern both procedural fairness and the obligations of public figures when commenting on the judiciary.

Ultimately, the CJP Spokesperson episode serves as a reminder that democratic participation depends on both the freedom to question authority and respect for lawful procedures. Political organisations may challenge government action, demand accountability and contest judicial decisions, but those arguments are strongest when grounded in evidence and pursued through appropriate legal channels. The significance of Singh’s apology will therefore be judged not merely by the words spoken in court, but also by how the organisation conducts its future protests, legal challenges and public communications.
