Farhan Akhtar has finally addressed the Don 3 fallout, and the internet caught on instantly.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India about the 25th anniversary of his directorial debut, Dil Chahta Hai, Akhtar recalled how Saif Ali Khan nearly walked out of the film just before shooting began, after a scheduling clash left him “half in, half out.” Everyone tried to talk him into staying, Akhtar said, admitting the episode left him rattled at the time.
Then came the line that set off the internet. Reflecting on how close he’d come to losing his lead actor, Akhtar remarked that such last-minute exits seem to be “a pattern nowadays,” adding that it isn’t just something that has happened to him. Social media instantly linked the remark to Don 3’s very public collapse earlier this year.
The Don 3 Backstory
The comment lands against the backdrop of one of Bollywood’s messiest exits in recent memory. Ranveer Singh reportedly walked away from Don 3 in December 2025, only weeks before the film was due to go on floors. The fallout snowballed into a dispute over compensation, pulled in industry bodies, and briefly saw the Federation of Western India Cine Employees impose a ban on Singh, before lifting it after he approached the body personally.
Reports of the split have diverged sharply. Some accounts say Ranveer accused Farhan of quietly exploring other actors for the role — including approaching Hrithik Roshan — while he was still signed on as the lead. Farhan has denied those claims. On the money side, Ranveer is believed to have returned his signing amount, while the makers sought roughly ₹45 crore in damages to cover pre-production costs.
Old Wound, New Attention
This isn’t the first time Akhtar has spoken about the chaos surrounding Don 3. Back in April, he’d already conceded that the experience had tested him, saying he’d learnt to “expect the unexpected” and that nothing could be taken for granted until it was actually on film. He even joked that the setbacks sometimes made him want to go back to acting instead of directing.
What’s changed now is the timing. With Ranveer riding high off the success of Dhurandhar, and Don 3 still without a confirmed lead, Farhan’s “pattern” remark has reopened a controversy many assumed had gone quiet.
