Government Shuts Down Lockdown Rumours, Calls Claims Baseless Amid Global Supply Jitters

Centre reassures citizens there is no plan for restrictions, warns against panic as global supply concerns and misread political signals trigger confusion

Hardeep Singh Puri: No Lockdown In India

The Union government has issued a decisive rebuttal to swirling rumours of a nationwide lockdown, with Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri stating unequivocally that no such proposal exists under consideration. The intervention comes as speculation, fuelled by global energy uncertainties and misinterpreted political messaging, sparking unease among citizens.

In a strongly worded statement on social media platform X, Puri underlined that the government is maintaining constant vigilance over the evolving global situation, particularly developments affecting energy markets, supply chains, and essential commodities. He assured that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, all necessary measures are in place to guarantee uninterrupted access to fuel, energy, and other critical resources.

Firm Rebuttal to Misinformation

Dismissing the speculation outright, Puri described claims of an impending lockdown as “completely false” and cautioned against the reckless spread of misinformation. He urged citizens to remain calm, responsible, and united, stressing that attempts to incite panic in a sensitive global climate are both harmful and irresponsible.

The clarification is aimed at restoring public confidence at a time when concerns over global oil and gas shortages have intensified. These developments had triggered apprehensions within India, particularly around the supply of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, which some quarters had flagged as worrisome.

Global Context, Domestic Assurance

The government had also rejected similar claims earlier in the week, making it clear that there are no plans to impose restrictions on public movement or economic activity. Officials pointed out that recent remarks by the Prime Minister had been widely misconstrued, further fuelling unnecessary alarm.

The confusion stemmed from Modi’s references to “preparedness” during parliamentary addresses, delivered amid escalating tensions in West Asia and their potential economic fallout. The government clarified that these remarks were intended to emphasise administrative readiness and strategic foresight, not signal any form of restrictive intervention.

Anniversary Effect Amplifies Anxiety

The resurgence of lockdown rumours coincided with the sixth anniversary of the COVID-19 lockdown in India, a factor that amplified anxieties across social media platforms. Authorities, however, were quick to stress that references to “COVID-like preparedness” pertain strictly to contingency planning and institutional readiness, not to the imposition of stay-at-home orders or mobility curbs.

Reaffirming India’s capacity to navigate external shocks, Puri highlighted the country’s track record of resilience in the face of global disruptions. He noted that the government remains committed to a proactive, coordinated, and timely response to any emerging challenges.

The Centre’s categorical denial underscores an effort to contain misinformation before it escalates into public panic, even as it continues to monitor global developments that may carry economic implications for the country.
