The Odisha government has announced that the Government Medical College and Hospital in Phulbani will be renamed after Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati, marking a significant tribute to the Hindu spiritual leader’s decades-long contribution to tribal welfare, education, and social service in Kandhamal district. Alongside the renaming, the state has sanctioned a ₹13 crore development package for the Jalespata Ashram and its educational institutions, describing the move as an effort to preserve his legacy for future generations.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced the decision while outlining a broader initiative aimed at strengthening educational and residential infrastructure connected with the late seer’s work. According to the state government, the financial package will support the preservation of the Jalespata Ashram, construction of a 300-seat girls’ hostel, improvements to water supply, renovation of hostel buildings, additional classrooms, toilets, and boundary walls. Officials said the measures are intended to benefit students and local communities while safeguarding an important historical site.
For many residents of Kandhamal, the decision carries symbolic as well as practical significance. The district has witnessed decades of social and developmental challenges, and supporters believe naming a major healthcare institution after Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati acknowledges his role in promoting education and community welfare in remote tribal regions. The ₹13 crore package includes ₹5 crore for the construction of a modern girls’ hostel capable of accommodating around 300 students. Additional funding will be used for a river lift water supply project, classroom construction, sanitation infrastructure, and renovation of existing residential facilities. State officials said these improvements are designed to strengthen access to education in the tribal-dominated district.
The life and work of Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati remain closely associated with Kandhamal, where he spent several decades working among tribal communities. He established educational institutions, promoted Sanskrit learning, and supported welfare activities in villages across the region.
