The brutal killing of Hindu leader Suhas Shetty in Karnataka has raised concerns of a possible terrorist conspiracy, prompting the Ministry of Home Affairs to hand over the case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Authorities suspect the attack may go beyond personal motives and involve organized extremist elements.
The incident took place on May 1, 2025, in the Kinnigoli area of Bajpe, Mangaluru, when Suhas Shetty was traveling with a few companions. Their vehicle was reportedly ambushed by a group of five to six armed assailants wielding sharp weapons. The savage assault was captured on nearby CCTV cameras. Though Shetty was quickly taken to a hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
Shetty was an active member of several Hindu groups, and his social involvement is believed to have made him a target for extremist factions. His murder has sparked tension across Mangaluru and Karnataka, drawing national attention.
Arrests and Suspicions
As part of the investigation, Karnataka Police have detained 16 individuals so far. Among them is Abdul Razak, taken into custody on June 3, who allegedly provided shelter to the prime suspect Mohammed Muzammil and others. Razak is also said to have close ties with Muzammil and another key suspect Naushad. Authorities claim the murder was plotted at Razak’s residence.
Possible Links to Banned Group
Investigators believe the murder might have connections to the Popular Front of India (PFI)—an organization banned in 2022 for its alleged role in promoting extremism and involvement in anti-national activities. These suspected links further deepened the gravity of the case, leading the Home Ministry to involve the NIA.
According to officials, the crime could be part of a larger plan to incite fear and disrupt communal harmony, rather than just a personal vendetta.
Public Response and Political Reactions
The murder has created a charged atmosphere in Mangaluru and nearby regions, with protests and strong political statements emerging in its aftermath. In response, the state government has proposed setting up a special task force to manage the situation and ensure peace. Meanwhile, social media platforms have seen a surge in rumors and inflammatory content, adding to public anxiety.
What’s Next? NIA Begins Investigation
With the NIA officially taking over the case, there is renewed hope that the truth behind Suhas Shetty’s killing will come to light. The agency is expected to conduct an on-site investigation, interrogate witnesses and suspects, and uncover the full extent of the alleged conspiracy.
Their findings may not only bring justice to the victim but also reveal how deep-rooted this suspected terror network really is.
Rising Concerns in Karnataka
Karnataka has emerged as a growing focal point in India’s counter-terrorism operations, with several arrests and terror-related incidents linked to radical Islamic groups reported over the past few years. Authorities have uncovered multiple plots allegedly connected to banned organizations such as ISIS and the Popular Front of India (PFI), sparking concern over the state’s vulnerability to extremist activities.
