In a disturbing twist to the tragic death of Indore’s Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon in Meghalaya, his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, has now surrendered to police in Uttar Pradesh and is accused of orchestrating her husband’s murder.
According to police reports, Sonam was located in Ghazipur, UP, and turned herself in at the Nandganj police station, following an intensive multi-state investigation. She is believed to have hired contract killers to carry out the murder while the couple was vacationing in Meghalaya.
Raja and Sonam, recently married, arrived in Meghalaya in late May for their honeymoon. They were last seen on May 23 while exploring tourist spots near Cherrapunji. Days later, Raja’s body was found at the bottom of a deep gorge near the Weisawdong Parking Lot in the East Khasi Hills. A blood-stained machete, suspected to be the murder weapon, was also recovered from the scene.
At that time, Sonam had also vanished, triggering suspicion and prompting police to widen the search across multiple states.
Major Arrests and Ongoing Investigation
Police have so far arrested three suspects—two from Indore and one from Uttar Pradesh—believed to be directly involved in the murder. With Sonam’s surrender, four people are now in custody. One more individual is still at large.
Meghalaya’s Director General of Police, Idashisha Nongrang, confirmed that all arrested individuals are being questioned and that the investigation is actively progressing. Authorities are now examining the possible motive, including financial disputes or personal conflicts, and tracing communication and payment links.
Political Reactions and Public Pressure
The case has gained national attention, especially after both families accused local authorities of mishandling the investigation. They cited overlooked CCTV footage and GPS data from a rented scooty, which reportedly showed the presence of multiple individuals near the crime scene. These leads, they say, were initially ignored.
Responding to public outcry, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma posted on social media:
“A major breakthrough in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case within 7 days. Three accused from Madhya Pradesh arrested, wife has surrendered, and the search continues for one more. Good job by Meghalaya Police.”
Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah to order a CBI investigation, citing the need for an impartial and thorough inquiry to ensure justice is served.
What’s Next?
With the key suspect now in custody and three others arrested, investigators are piecing together how the murder was planned and executed. The search continues for the remaining accused, and further developments are expected in the coming days.
The case has exposed deep cracks in inter-state investigative coordination and has raised broader questions about tourist safety, trust, and how quickly personal relationships can turn deadly.
