Rajasthan’s urban local body elections have produced an unusual set of political winners: Gen Z candidates in their early twenties who have entered electoral politics and secured councillor seats, bringing a new generation into the state’s grassroots political landscape. A report by The Indian Express highlighted several of these young winners—including a 21-year-old housewife from Jaipur, a 21-year-old journalist from Alwar and other young candidates who successfully contested the civic polls.
Among the young winners is 21-year-old Faiz Hassan, a Congress candidate who won a councillor’s seat in Jaipur.
Hassan has said that sanitation and roads will be among his priorities, putting the focus squarely on the everyday civic issues that councillors deal with at ward level.
His victory is notable not only because of his age but also because it places a member of Gen Z inside Jaipur’s elected civic administration.
Neha Sharma, 21, emerged as another prominent young winner, securing a seat for the BJP in Thanagazi in Alwar.
According to The Indian Express, Sharma has a journalism background and had been living in Gurugram before entering electoral politics. Her victory gives the BJP one of its youngest representatives in Rajasthan’s new civic political landscape.
Suman Bhati, 22, also won a councillor’s seat in Jaipur on a Congress ticket.
Bhati has spoken about establishing libraries in her area, alongside addressing local civic requirements. Her victory is another example of young candidates turning their attention to ward-level politics and community development.
The Gen Z success story also extends beyond the BJP and Congress.
Saniya Khanam, 21, won as an independent candidate in Jahazpur, emerging as one of the youngest councillors in the Bhilwara region.
Her victory was particularly striking because of the political history of her family: her grandfather, who had won the seat eight times, was defeated this time.
A new generation enters Rajasthan politics
The emergence of these young councillors comes against the backdrop of a fiercely contested civic election across Rajasthan.
According to The Indian Express, the state’s 2026 urban local body elections covered 309 urban local bodies and 10,245 councillor posts, with more than 1.44 crore voters eligible to participate. The BJP emerged as the largest party in 148 urban local bodies, while Congress was the largest party in 104.
But beyond the BJP-Congress numbers, the victories of candidates such as Hassan, Sharma, Bhati and Khanam offer another takeaway: young Indians are increasingly willing to enter politics at the grassroots level rather than wait for conventional political careers to develop.
Their immediate test, however, will be less about their age and more about delivery — roads, sanitation, public spaces, libraries, infrastructure and other issues that directly affect residents.
For Rajasthan’s Gen Z councillors, the election victory is therefore only the first step. Their performance in the ward could determine whether these individual victories become the beginning of a broader generational shift in the state’s politics.
