Uttar Pradesh Government under the leadership of its Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has maintained a zero-tolerance policy as far as terrorism is concerned. From neutralizing gangsters to keeping extremism in check the Yogi Government has been commendable in their administration. Now, the CM Yogi administration has launched a massive crackdown on illegal Maktabs and madrassas.
On 18 November, the UP ATS in collaboration with the Intelligence Bureau started an investigation of 286 Maktabs and 19 unrecognized madrasas that are located in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh to probe the funding source of these institutions. Apart from unearthing funding sources, the investigation aims to assess student demographics and determine why these institutions operate without recognition.
As per reports, IB officials obtained a list of these unrecognized establishments from Gonda’s Minority Welfare Office. The probe focuses on how long these institutions have been active and their compliance with regulatory requirements. The ATS had previously been examining funding aspects, but the IB’s involvement has intensified scrutiny, raising concerns among madrasa operators.
These institutions primarily educate Muslim children, with Maktabs offering only religious teachings in informal settings, while madrasas provide both religious and modern education, often with accommodation. Unlike Maktabs, madrasas typically require formal recognition, but a state-wide inspection revealed over 4,000 unrecognized madrasas, including those in Gonda.
The Gonda administration too is collaborating in the inquiry in order to expedite the investigation. The investigation includes support from Gonda’s District Minority Welfare Officer, Ramesh Chandra, who has facilitated access to necessary records and sites. Madrasa operators have been instructed to assist with the inquiry, which involves reviewing documents and categorizing institutions for efficient scrutiny.
The probe seeks to ensure compliance and accountability, with findings to be compiled in a detailed report for government review. The investigation highlights growing concerns about unregulated institutions and their impact, prompting a closer examination of their operations and funding. This effort underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring transparency and adherence to legal frameworks in educational institutions across the region.
The main purpose of the investigation is to get a vision of the sources through which these madrassas receive and the background of the children attending the madrassas. Also, the administration through this investigation will get in touch about how the madrasas operate.
