Diabetes is a group of conditions, where body cannot produce or use produced insulin. While Type 1 Diabetes is caused when the body stops producing insulin, a person is said to be suffering from Type 2 Diabetes, when the body is not able to use the produced insulin efficiently.
Type-2 Diabetes is a chronic disorder influenced by diet and other lifestyle factors. There can be multiple factors that trigger Type 2 Diabetes, like a sedentary lifestyle, bad eating habits and being on the higher side of the weighing scale. It can be cured by reversing these, in which ‘Intermittent Fasting’ can prove to be an unmatchable life hack.

What is intermittent fasting?
You may have received a lot of infotainment through shorts and reels about how intermittent fasting can help you lose weight. Intermittent Fasting is a type of fasting that involves a regular pattern of eating a few or no calories for a fixed period. The period can vary from 12 hours a day to 6 or 8 hours. This involves restricted time feeding and periodic fasting.
So, now the question is, how not eating or intaking few calories can help manage or reverse Type 2 Diabetes? Fasting, as practiced by our ancestors since time immemorial, causes an increase in growth hormone levels, increase in norepinephrine and decrease of insulin levels, thus ultimately increasing the metabolic rate. The increase of metabolic rate in any Type 2 Diabetic person may act as ‘Ram Baan Ilaj’.

How Intermittent Fasting can help reverse Diabetes Type 2
As per research published in August 2021 in the journal Hormone and Metabolic Research, it was found that Intermittent Fasting lowered insulin resistance in the patients suffering from Type 2 Diabetes. Another review of existing research published in February 2021 in the journal Clinical Diabetes and Endocrinology included several studies that found that intermittent fasting reduced fasting glucose levels, weight, and post-meal blood sugar levels in people with type II diabetes.
Thus, it can be said that restricting calorie intake improves metabolic health, casting a direct impact in insulin resistance and reducing body weight. Intermittent Fasting decreases levels of leptin in the body. Also, the process of calorie limitation is easy to follow as compared to any other rigorous diet plan.

The caution needed
Limited meals and calorie intake or limiting meal to a certain window has benefits to the symptoms of Type II Diabetes, especially regarding insulin management and weight loss. As a notion of disclaimer, major adjustments in eating patterns could lead to swings in blood sugar levels (hyperglycaemia and hypoglycaemia), which can be dangerous and hence must be practiced only under consultation. Hence, one must not go for a diet plan or fasting plan you see online and must consult a physician or dietician before starting any such plan.
