Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi on Wednesday said the Indian Navy was just minutes away from launching a maritime strike against Pakistan last year during Operation Sindoor, a military campaign launched in response to the deadly Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people, mostly tourists.
Addressing officers at a naval investiture ceremony in Mumbai, where he presented Yudh Seva Medals to senior personnel for their roles in the operation, Admiral Tripathi said the Navy had reached an advanced stage of operational readiness when Islamabad requested a halt to kinetic military actions.
“It is not a hidden fact anymore that we were just minutes away from striking Pakistan from the sea, when they requested stoppage of kinetic actions,” Admiral Tripathi reportedly said, underlining the Indian Navy’s preparedness and resolve during the crisis.
Operation Sindoor
Launched on May 7, 2025, Operation Sindoor was India’s retaliatory response to the horrific terror attack in Pahalgam in April of that year, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians and wounded several others. The operation involved coordinated strikes by the Indian Armed Forces against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan‑Occupied Kashmir.
Admiral Tripathi highlighted that naval forces maintained a highly aggressive posture throughout the operation, with warships deployed in key maritime zones and ready to execute orders if the situation escalated further.
Although specific targets or weapons systems were not disclosed, the chief’s comments signalled the Navy’s readiness to employ sea‑based firepower had the conflict deepened.
Cessation of Hostilities and De‑escalation
According to the Navy chief, Pakistan’s request for a pause in military actions came as Indian units were poised for potential engagement, prompting a strategic decision to halt further kinetic steps in favour of de‑escalation.
While some global commentary had suggested that external actors played a role in curbing hostilities, Indian authorities maintained that the cessation was agreed upon through direct talks between the two sides’ Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs), with both militaries coordinating to reduce tensions.

Admiral Tripathi also used the occasion to highlight the broader capabilities of the Indian Navy, noting that Operation Sindoor reinforced public confidence in the force’s operational readiness. He pointed to a 17‑hour overnight embarkation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi along the western seaboard as a demonstration of India’s maritime strength and operational depth.
“Besides Operation Sindoor and the relentless operational tempo through the year, we were also very proud to showcase the breadth and depth of our operational capabilities to the Prime Minister,” he said, emphasising the Navy’s evolving strategic role in safeguarding national interests at sea.
