The Government renewed its focus on strengthening tribal livelihoods as the Van Dhan Conclave, centred on the theme “Sustainable Livelihoods for Tribal India”, was inaugurated at Sunder Nursery in New Delhi during the ongoing Bharat Tribes Fest 2026.
The conclave was inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Durgadas Uikey, who underscored the government’s commitment to improving economic opportunities for tribal communities through sustainable livelihood initiatives, entrepreneurship promotion, and enhanced value addition of Minor Forest Produce.
During the event, the minister visited several stalls at the Bharat Tribes Fest Bazaar and interacted with tribal artisans showcasing their work. He praised their craftsmanship and encouraged them to expand their market presence while continuing to preserve India’s diverse tribal traditions.
Addressing participants, Uikey said the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, remains committed to empowering tribal communities by strengthening income opportunities and improving market access. He noted that the Van Dhan initiative has played a crucial role in boosting incomes and building stronger market linkages for tribal producers.
Policy Dialogue and Knowledge Exchange
The conclave was organised by the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED) under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and brought together policymakers, experts, academicians and tribal entrepreneurs to discuss strategies for strengthening the tribal economy.
The inaugural session began with opening remarks by TRIFED Managing Director M. Rajamurugan, followed by a keynote address from Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Tribal Affairs Manish Thakur. Padma Shri awardee Chaitram Devchand Pawar also shared insights during the session.
Thakur highlighted the importance of innovation, coordination among institutions, and stronger integration with markets in building sustainable livelihood ecosystems for tribal communities. Pawar emphasised the need for capacity building and preserving traditional knowledge systems, while also promoting sustainable practices such as reuse and recycling.
Focus on Value Chains and Market Access
Four thematic sessions formed the core of the conclave discussions. These sessions explored community engagement and grassroots solutions, examined legal frameworks and operational challenges, discussed ways to strengthen Van Dhan Vikas Kendra value chains, and considered strategies to expand both domestic and international market access for tribal products.
The event saw participation from representatives of central ministries, state governments, Van Dhan Vikas Kendras, private sector organisations, non-government organisations, and international institutions, creating a platform for collaboration and knowledge sharing.
Expanding Reach of Tribal Development Initiatives
TRIFED continues to play a significant role in the socio-economic development of tribal communities by promoting trade in Minor Forest Produce and supporting tribal products.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Vikas Mission, 4,172 Van Dhan Vikas Kendras have been sanctioned across the country, benefiting more than 12.48 lakh tribal members. In addition, the PMJANMAN scheme has sanctioned 540 Van Dhan Vikas Kendras specifically for the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups, benefiting around 0.46 lakh members.
The conclave reaffirmed the government’s broader objective of inclusive and sustainable growth by strengthening tribal livelihoods and integrating tribal producers into evolving markets.
Organisers have also invited visitors to attend Bharat Tribes Fest 2026, which will continue until April 5, offering the public an opportunity to experience the cultural richness and entrepreneurial spirit of India’s tribal communities.
