The mastermind of the Shaheen Bagh anti-CAA protest, Sharjeel Imam has reportedly been arrested by a joint team of Delhi, UP and Bihar police from his ancestral town in Jehanabad, Bihar. Imam who urged his brethren to cut off north-eastern states from India was arrested while he was hiding inside a mosque.
Imam had given a venomous speech, asking the people to cut off Assam and Northeast India from the rest of the country. “Cutting off Assam is our responsibility. Let Assam and India be separated, only then they will listen to us. You know what the condition of Muslims is in Assam, CAA, NRC has been done over there, people have been thrown in detention camps and well, the massacre is taking place over there but in the next 6-8 months, we will find that all Bengalis have been killed, be it Hindu or Muslim. So, if we want to help Assam, we will have to close the gateway to the northeast.”
He added, “The Chicken’s neck belongs to the Muslims, that area is dominated by Muslims.” The Chicken’s neck, or Siliguri Corridor is a 22 kilometre narrow stretch of land which connects the Northeast with the rest of India and is crucial for the country’s security.
Ever since his speech went viral, reacting promptly, over 5 states had filed an FIRs against Sharjeel Imam. Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Delhi and UP police registered cases against him, while a joint team of Delhi Police, UP and Bihar police had even initiated the search operation according to several news reports. The police had even conducted a raid in his ancestral home in Jehanabad district, Bihar hours before his arrest.
Imam further added that Kanhaiya has given many hefty speeches but has not done anything “productive” clearly stating that the call for the break-up of India needs to be followed by the deed itself, and that is exactly his intent.
The Wire which has drawn fire in the past for propagating anti-India agenda, published four Opeds written by Sharjeel Imam, one of them written only last year in the run up to the Parliamentary polls. This depicts the support people like Imam gets from the leftist media.
Bihar CM Nitish Kumar reacted after Imam’s arrest, “Nobody should do anything that is not in the interest of the nation. The accusations and the arrest – the court will decide on the matter.”
The prompt action and ultimate arrest of Sharjeel Imam is commendable, the police of UP, Delhi and Bihar must be appreciated for this. Imam should be given a legendary treatment for his mischievous and lethal intentions while the people (liberals) crying rivers for this man must also be exposed. Stern action on such extremist elements would set a precedent and would act as a deterrent.
