Netflix’s Biggest India Series Yet Was Filmed at 16,000 Feet With Real Air Force Jets — And a Widow’s Memories

A widow's memories, real IAF jets, and 16,000 feet of altitude — inside Netflix's biggest Indian production yet

Netflix just dropped what might be its most ambitious Indian production ever, and the story behind it is even more gripping than the trailer suggests.

“Operation Safed Sagar: The Untold Story of the Kargil War” premiered on Netflix on August 7, and it’s not your standard war drama. It’s Netflix’s largest operational undertaking in India to date, one that contributed more than $24 million to the Indian economy, according to a Bloomberg report. The crew went to extremes to get it right — filming at altitudes of nearly 16,000 feet and relying on more than 1,200 local visual-effects artists to build 50 minutes of aerial combat sequences. The series was shot across operational Indian Air Force bases, with access to real Air Force aircraft and infrastructure — a level of access Netflix called unprecedented.

The six-episode series doesn’t try to cover the entire 1999 Kargil War. Instead, it zeroes in on one specific chapter that’s barely been told on screen: the story of the Golden Arrows Squadron, one of the IAF’s youngest units, thrust into what became the highest air operation in the war’s history. As the Kargil War erupts between India and Pakistan, the squadron takes to the skies on a dangerous mission behind enemy lines.

What makes the show hit different, though, is how it was actually built. When creator Abhijeet Singh Parmar first met Alka Ahuja — widow of Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja, who was killed in the 1999 war — his team arrived with 70 to 100 prepared questions and asked none of them. Every corner of her home was a tribute to her husband, and all the team offered was space for her to talk. What she shared shaped part of the series — and in a moment that closes the loop entirely, she later handed the production her husband’s real wing badge, which lead actor Siddharth now wears on screen.

The project almost didn’t happen at this scale. Co-creator Kushal Srivastava originally wanted to make it as a film, but Parmar pushed for a series despite neither of them having produced anything of this magnitude before — turning the idea into a 200-page pitch he expected Netflix to reject outright. Instead, it was greenlit within two weeks.

The cast leans heavily on proven talent: Siddharth, Jimmy Shergill, Abhay Verma, Dia Mirza, Prajakta Koli, Adil Hussain, Mihir Ahuja, Taaruk Raina, Arnav Bhasin and Amrita Bagchi, directed by Oni Sen. The show was shaped through extensive research and first-hand consultations with Indian Air Force veterans, which explains why so much of the production leaned on authenticity over spectacle for its own sake.

The series has already won over one particularly important audience: the Indian Air Force itself. Speaking at the occasion, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, Chief of the Air Staff, said: “I would like to first thank Netflix for such a wonderful series that they have conceived and put together. I think the first episode itself tells us what is going to come in the remaining ones. My personal take on this is I think this is very close to reality what you saw. Yes, there will be a little bit of dramatics in cinema but the way it has been portrayed, the pre-war days at least, they come out quite realistic and took us back to our old days in the squadron and how things went. Indeed, Kargil was a turning point for not only just the Indian Air Force, but the air forces around the world when never before had we done such a thing. To make a series like this, I think this is what is going to make it reach the common man. And I’m sure not only just in India, but around the world, the entire Indian community, whenever they watch this, they’ll be very proud of the Indian Air Force and the Indian defense forces.”

For a series built around real cockpits, real mountain terrain and a widow’s private grief made public with her blessing — and now backed by the sitting IAF chief’s own endorsement — “Operation Safed Sagar” is being positioned as more than just another military drama. It’s Netflix’s biggest bet yet that Indian audiences want their history told with this level of scale and care.
