Most of the 84 Border Security Force personnel taken ill in Imphal have been treated and are being discharged. Officials said only five would remain hospitalised for further treatment, with the rest expected to go home by Thursday evening. All patients were stable and out of danger.

BSF has begun an internal inquiry, and the cause will be known once the medical report is in. Tests are being conducted to determine the cause, and doctors saw no signs of deterioration. No authority or BSF source has reported any indication of foul play.

What happened

The incident took place on Thursday, October 15, around 8:30 am, when personnel fell ill after a breakfast of puri and aloo sabzi. Those affected belong to the D/58 Battalion, who had arrived from Chhattisgarh a day earlier. They suffered severe nausea and vomiting and were admitted to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal around noon. The unit was staying at a temporary camp in Imphal West district. Reports place it under Lamsang Police Station, while the Manipur Home Minister said the camp was at Taothong Lamkhai. Accounts differ on the exact site, with some describing a construction site and others a temporary camp. Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam visited the hospital and assured the personnel of state assistance, and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh expressed concern.

Why it is being called suspected food poisoning

Many people fell ill at once after the same meal, with vomiting as the main symptom, which fits a common-source foodborne illness. The label is provisional, since the cause is unconfirmed. Food-safety contamination, a water issue or something else remain possible until lab results arrive. Contamination of a meal prepared for a freshly arrived unit would be an unusual but not unheard-of event.

Why Manipur makes this a bigger story

BSF personnel, along with other Central Armed Police Forces and the Army, are deployed across Manipur to help maintain law and order in a state affected by ethnic violence since May 2023. Any incident affecting a large block of deployed personnel draws attention for that reason. A battalion that is sick cannot carry out its duties, and the first days after a deployment are when units are most dependent on temporary arrangements for food, water and shelter.

The newly arrived unit’s situation is also routine for central forces. Battalions are rotated into the state from elsewhere in the country, often settling into improvised camps, and mess arrangements at such sites are the usual point of failure in cases like this.
