Dhruv Rathee takes ‘vote chori’ campaign to London, raises debate over internationalising India’s electoral dispute

YouTuber Dhruv Rathee called on supporters to protest alleged electoral irregularities outside Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in London’s parliament square, at noon on Saturday. His appeal to raise the “vote chori” allegations internationally has sharpened debate over whether disputes concerning India’s voter lists should be pursued through domestic institutions or overseas campaigning.

In an X post on Friday, Rathee wrote, “I’ve just reached London. It’s time the world sees the reality of vote chor and murderer of democracy. International danka bajane ka time aa gaya hai. Join the protest tomorrow in front of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in parliament square at 12pm if you’re here. Jai Hind”

The announcement followed Rathee’s detention at his Gurugram home on October 10 before a Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) rally in Delhi seeking the resignation of the chief election commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar. Rathee alleged police “kidnapped” him without a warrant or access to a lawyer. Police described the action as preventive, saying the gathering lacked permission amid security restrictions.

Voter rolls under judicial scrutiny

The confrontation centres on the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Commission data cited by Reuters show approximately 130 million names deleted during verification, including 28 million deceased people, 63 million who had relocated and 30 million who could not be traced. Opposition parties allege the process risks disenfranchising eligible voters, while the ECI denies political bias and says wrongly deleted electors can apply for re-enrolment.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court sought the commission’s response to a petition by Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders challenging the revision procedure. The petition seeks an audit of deletions and safeguards against removing voters without notice. The court has not ruled on the allegations.

Overseas scrutiny and sovereignty

Rathee’s decision to take the electoral controversy to London raises a wider question about bringing India’s domestic political disputes before international audiences. Those opposed to internationalizing such disagreements argue that allegations concerning electoral rolls should be addressed through the Election Commission of India, Indian courts and established democratic processes. They contend that taking these disputes to foreign platforms risks inviting external political pressure on institutions responsible for resolving them.

The opposing argument is that overseas demonstrations can draw attention to alleged democratic shortcomings and encourage greater accountability. Rathee has explicitly called for international attention to the controversy, although there is no confirmed indication that he has sought intervention by a foreign government.

The debate comes amid India’s recent rejection of comments by the UN human rights office concerning detentions during protests in Delhi. The Ministry of External Affairs described the remarks as “unwarranted” and “unacceptable” interference in India’s internal affairs, maintaining that peaceful assembly is constitutionally protected, subject to reasonable restrictions. Its response was directed at the UN’s comments, not Rathee’s London announcement.
