The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the procurement of 160 Satellite Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons (SAT-SAAW) for the Indian Air Force, in a deal worth ₹810.79 crore under the Buy (Indian – Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category.
The contract was signed in New Delhi on Tuesday in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, and includes associated equipment alongside the weapons themselves.
SAT-SAAW is an air-to-ground precision-guided glide bomb capable of neutralising enemy airfields from a long stand-off range, allowing aircraft to strike targets while staying well outside the reach of enemy air defences. The weapon can be launched from multiple IAF platforms, including the Jaguar, Hawk and Su-30 MKI.
Developed indigenously by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the system will carry 60 per cent indigenous content, with key sub-systems — including the Initial Measurement Unit, Long Impact Delay Fuse and Twin Store Carrier — also being indigenised to further the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat push in the defence sector.
Deliveries of the SAT-SAAW are scheduled to take place between 2027-28 and 2028-29. Once inducted, the weapon is expected to strengthen the IAF’s operational reach and bolster the country’s overall defence preparedness, allowing the force to sustain operations against enemy infrastructure with greater precision and reduced risk to its own platforms.
The contract adds to a string of recent indigenous defence procurement deals as India pushes to reduce reliance on imported weapons systems and build up domestic manufacturing capacity in critical defence technologies.
