Cheapest Used Car Financing in India: Bank vs NBFC vs Platform Tie-Ups Compared
Share on FacebookShare on X

Public sector banks usually offer the lowest headline rates on used-car loans, typically starting near 9 to 10% p.a. for borrowers with a CIBIL score above 750, but they’re slower and stricter on eligibility. NBFCs and dealer-linked platform financing run 1 to 4 percentage points higher, often 11 to 16% p.a., in exchange for faster approval and more flexibility on credit history. The cheapest loan for you depends more on your credit profile and down payment size than on which lender type you approach first.

Why used car financing is unique to each applicant

A bank’s advertised starting rate applies to a narrow slice of applicants possessing a high credit score, stable salaried income, and low existing debt. Move outside that profile and the bank’s actual quoted rate, or its outright rejection, can leave you paying more in time and reapplication costs than an NBFC would have charged upfront. Therefore, the right comparison isn’t lender type in isolation. Rather, it’s lender type matched against your specific credit and income profile.

Rates and figures above reflect the lending market as of September 7, 2026. The Reserve Bank of India’s repo rate has held at 5.25% since a December 2025 cut, and individual lender rates move independently of that benchmark, sometimes monthly. Verify a specific lender’s current rate directly before applying.

Bank loans: lowest headline rate, narrowest eligibility

Public sector banks and larger private banks price used-car loans off their own cost of funds, which tracks the RBI’s repo rate with a lag. With the repo rate flat at 5.25% through 2026, banks have had less reason to move rates sharply in either direction this year.

Expect processing fees of roughly 0.5 to 2% of the loan amount for nationalised banks like SBI, and a stricter age-of-vehicle cap (many banks won’t finance a car that will cross 8 to 10 years old before the loan tenure ends). A rejected bank application doesn’t hurt your score much beyond the hard inquiry itself, but the 3 to 7 working day turnaround means it’s a poor fit if you need the car within the week.

NBFCs: faster, pricier, more forgiving on credit history

Non-banking financial companies price in the extra risk of a thinner credit file with a higher rate, usually landing 2 to 5 percentage points above the best bank offer for a comparable borrower. What you get in return is real: same-day or next-day disbursal in many cases, acceptance of self-employed income proof that banks often reject outright, and financing on older vehicles that banks won’t touch. The math still favours an NBFC over a bank you’d get rejected by; a slower approval on paper doesn’t help if the bank was never going to approve the loan at all.

Platform tie-up financing: convenience baked into the deal

When you finance through the same platform where you’re buying the car, the lender relationship is usually a bank or NBFC partner working behind the platform’s interface rather than a separate financing product.

The rate typically lands between the two categories above, and the real value is procedural: one application, one document upload, often an instant in-principle approval shown against the specific car you’re already viewing.

Cars24, for example, offers digital loan approval with flexible EMI tenures of up to 72 months and zero-down-payment options for eligible buyers, per Cars24’s financing and buying overview, which collapses the separate step of shopping for a lender into the purchase itself. When buying, read the sanction letter closely for a processing fee or a slightly marked-up rate built into the convenience; ask what the base partner-lender rate would be if you applied to that lender directly, and use that as your comparison point.

For a first-time buyer specifically, this bundled route is usually the easiest starting point precisely because there’s no separate lender relationship to build from zero. You skip the step of walking into a bank with no prior account history and hoping for a fair quote; the platform’s partner lender has already priced the car and the buyer together as one transaction.

What actually moves your rate more than lender type

  • Credit score. A CIBIL score above 750 typically qualifies you for the lowest tier at any lender; below 650, expect either a meaningfully higher rate or the NBFC route by default.
  • Down payment share. Every lender treats a larger down payment as lower risk. Pushing from 70% financed to 50% financed often moves you down a full rate tier.
  • Loan tenure. Shorter tenures (12 to 36 months) usually carry a lower rate than 60-plus month terms on the same loan amount, though the EMI is higher.
  • Vehicle age at loan maturity. A car that will be 9 to 10 years old when the loan ends gets priced as higher risk regardless of lender type, since resale value as collateral is thinner.
  • Existing relationship. A salary account or an existing loan in good standing with a bank can shave 0.25 to 0.5 percentage points off a quoted rate; it costs nothing to ask.

Choose based on your actual situation

  • Strong credit score, no urgency: go to a bank first. The rate gap over an NBFC is real money over a 3 to 5 year tenure, and the slower process costs you nothing if you’re not in a hurry to drive away.
  • Thin or damaged credit file: skip the bank application and go straight to an NBFC. A bank rejection wastes a week you could have spent already driving a financed car.
  • Buying and financing in one sitting: platform tie-up financing, such as Cars24’s digital loan flow, is the practical choice, but confirm the effective rate against what the underlying partner lender would quote you directly before signing.
  • First-time buyer with no existing lender relationship: start with a platform-bundled option such as Cars24’s rather than approaching a bank cold. You avoid the credit-history-from-scratch problem a first application to an unfamiliar bank often runs into, since the platform’s partner lender is already pricing the car and the buyer as one transaction.
  • Self-employed with irregular income proof: NBFCs generally have more flexible documentation requirements than banks for this profile; expect to pay for that flexibility in rate.

Where this comparison has limits

None of the rate ranges above is a quote. Actual pricing depends on the specific lender’s current campaign, your city, the car’s make and age, and your full credit report, which lenders weigh well beyond the headline score. Processing fees, foreclosure charges for early repayment, and mandatory insurance bundling vary by lender and can change the real cost of a loan more than a percentage point of headline rate does. Read the full loan agreement, specifically the foreclosure clause, before assuming the lowest advertised rate is the lowest total cost.

Five rules for financing a used car cheaply

  • Check your credit score before shopping lenders; it decides which tier you’re even eligible for.
  • Get a real quote from at least one bank and one NBFC before accepting platform-bundled financing.
  • Compare total cost over the full tenure, since the headline annual rate alone hides fees and charges.
  • Read the foreclosure charge before assuming you’ll keep the loan for its full term.
  • Ask any existing bank relationship for a rate match before applying elsewhere.

FAQs

Can I get a used car loan with a CIBIL score below 650?

Yes, through most NBFCs and some platform-tied lenders, though expect a rate at the higher end of the range and possibly a larger mandatory down payment. A handful of NBFCs specialise in this segment specifically and price for it rather than rejecting outright.

Is it cheaper to take a personal loan instead of a used car loan?

Usually no for larger amounts, since personal loans are unsecured and typically carry a higher rate than a secured used-car loan of similar tenure. For a small remaining balance after a large down payment, a short personal loan can sometimes work out similarly or better once you account for the used-car loan’s processing fee and mandatory insurance.

Does the car’s age affect my interest rate?

Yes. Lenders price older cars as higher risk since the resale value backing the loan is lower, and many banks cap financing on cars that would cross 8 to 10 years old before the loan ends. This is one of the more common reasons a bank rejects an application that an NBFC would approve.

Should I choose a longer tenure for a lower EMI even if the rate is slightly higher?

That depends on your monthly cash flow versus your total interest cost tolerance. A longer tenure lowers the EMI but increases total interest paid, so run both numbers before choosing, rather than optimising for the lower monthly payment alone.

Do dealers or platforms mark up the interest rate on tie-up financing?

Sometimes, in the form of a small margin built into the rate you’re quoted versus what the partner lender would offer directly. Ask for the partner lender’s name and check their direct listed rate before signing, since this comparison takes a few minutes and can reveal a meaningful markup.

Is prepaying or foreclosing a used car loan early worth it?

Usually yes if the foreclosure charge is low or waived after a minimum tenure, since it cuts total interest paid. Some lenders charge 2 to 5% of the outstanding principal as a foreclosure fee, which can offset most of the interest saved if you foreclose very early; check this clause before signing rather than after.
