Maharashtra’s Real-Life ‘Singham’: The Untold Story of Tukaram Mundhe, the IAS Officer India Can’t Stop Talking About

Tukaram Mundhe

He’s been transferred 25 times in 21 years, yet somehow keeps getting bigger jobs — and bigger applause. Meet the bureaucrat who has turned “doing his job properly” into a viral phenomenon.

Tukaram Mundhe is a 2005-batch IAS officer of the Maharashtra cadre, and in a state where bureaucratic reshuffles rarely make headlines, his transfers have become the stuff of legend. Over roughly two decades in service, he has been moved around an astonishing 25 times — a record that would break most careers but has instead built his reputation as one of India’s most fearless administrators.

The pattern is consistent: wherever Mundhe goes, strict enforcement follows, powerful toes get stepped on, and a transfer order arrives soon after. Rather than diminishing him, each transfer has only added to his legend as an officer who refuses to compromise on rules — regardless of political or administrative pressure.

From Solapur to Nashik: A Career Built on Confrontation

Mundhe’s no-nonsense style isn’t new. Long before his current assignment, he built his reputation while serving as Solapur Collector and later as Municipal Commissioner in Nashik and Navi Mumbai, where his strict decisions frequently drew the ire of local elected representatives. He was also transferred seven times between November 2014 and January 2019 alone, during which he held postings ranging from project director of the Maharashtra State AIDS Control Society to heading the Nagpur Municipal Corporation.

Through it all, one thread has remained constant: Mundhe enforces rules as written, irrespective of who it upsets.

The FDA Crackdown That Made Him a Viral Star

The latest — and arguably most public — chapter of Mundhe’s career began in May 2026, when he took charge as Commissioner of Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Almost immediately, he issued directives to tighten food safety compliance across the state, bringing dairies, transporters, distributors, wholesalers and retailers under stricter scrutiny.

Since taking over, Mundhe’s FDA has conducted more than 1,100 inspections across restaurants, food manufacturers and distributors statewide, resulting in licence suspensions, product seizures and action against establishments found violating food safety norms. A major statewide crackdown on milk adulteration has been central to the campaign, with the FDA uncovering synthetic milk manufacturing units and pushing for stricter compliance across the dairy supply chain. Mundhe has framed the issue in stark terms, arguing that adulterating milk amounts to endangering the health of children, mothers, patients and senior citizens who depend on it as a basic nutritional staple.

“Unstoppable Tukaram”: The Standing Ovation Moment

Mundhe’s aggressive campaign has made him a household name — and recently, a viral sensation. At a public event in Pune, he received a standing ovation as he walked onto the stage at Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir, with the crowd erupting in applause as people scrambled to record the moment on their phones. The clip, widely shared under the title “Unstoppable Tukaram,” turned the bureaucrat into an unlikely social media star.

Supporters have taken to calling him “Singham,” drawing comparisons to the fictional, incorruptible police officer of Bollywood fame — a nickname that captures both his popularity and his image as an administrator unwilling to be swayed by influence or intimidation.

Industrialist Harsh Goenka has been among his most vocal public backers, praising Mundhe on social media as an example of an officer who places public interest above personal considerations, and specifically highlighting his 25 transfers in two decades as proof of his integrity rather than a mark against him.

Not Without Controversy

Mundhe’s aggressive style has also invited legal scrutiny. The Bombay High Court has questioned the FDA’s approach in certain cases, particularly around the immediate suspension of licences, and has directed the department to apply food safety rules uniformly across both private and government-run establishments — including ordering inspections of court canteens themselves after judges raised concerns about selective enforcement.

The Bigger Picture

Whether inspecting dairy plants, shutting down non-compliant restaurants, or facing down political pressure in municipal corporations, Mundhe’s career has followed a singular script: enforce the rules, ruffle feathers, get transferred, repeat. In a bureaucracy often criticised for inertia and political capture, his story has struck a chord with a public hungry for administrators who deliver on paper promises.

For now, at least, “Singham” remains firmly in the FDA’s driving seat — and Maharashtra’s food and dairy industries are watching closely to see where his next inspection, and his next transfer, might land.
