The counting of votes in West Bengal has moved into a decisive phase, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) crossing the halfway mark in leads, marking a significant early consolidation in what remains a closely watched and politically charged contest.
At the latest stage of counting, the BJP was leading in 193 constituencies, moving comfortably past the halfway threshold in the 293-seat Assembly. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) stood at 94 seats, trailing in the current round of trends but continuing to remain in contention as counting progresses through multiple stages.
The crossing of the halfway mark carries clear political weight, as it places the BJP in a strong mid-count position in a state where the majority mark stands at 148. While final outcomes remain subject to change across remaining rounds, the current trend has decisively shaped the day’s narrative.
BJP’s spread across regions strengthens its early position
The BJP’s leads have been geographically broad, extending across north Bengal, central districts, and several urban pockets. In Sitalkuchi, the party has maintained a significant margin of over 20,000 votes, while in Kharagpur Sadar, senior leader Dilip Ghosh has remained ahead through early rounds of counting.
Key constituencies, including Nandigram, Panihati, Hingalganj, Barabani, and Jalpaiguri, have also reflected BJP leads, reinforcing the breadth of its early performance rather than concentration in isolated pockets.
At one stage in counting, the BJP had crossed the halfway mark in leads, prompting visible activity among supporters in Kolkata, where early celebrations were reported outside party offices.
TMC holds ground but remains behind in numbers
The Trinamool Congress continues to trail in overall leads but has retained presence in multiple constituencies, with 91 seats currently in its column. However, the party has not matched the pace of gains registered by the BJP in the same phase of counting.
Counting continues under tight security
The counting process is being conducted across 77 centres under extensive security deployment, with over 2.5 lakh personnel in place. Officials have reported a largely smooth process so far, with no major disruptions.
The election itself saw high voter participation across phases, adding further significance to an already high-stakes political contest.
As counting advances, the BJP’s crossing of the halfway mark has set the tone of the day’s political narrative. While the TMC remains in the race mathematically, the early-mid stage positioning has firmly placed the BJP in a commanding lead as West Bengal’s verdict continues to unfold.
