The BJP–JD(S) alliance has delivered a significant political setback to the ruling Congress in Karnataka, winning all four Legislative Council seats contested in the October 23 elections. The results, declared on October 28, saw the BJP retain three constituencies while the Janata Dal (Secular) wrested the Bengaluru Teachers’ seat from Congress. For a party governing the state, the complete defeat raises uncomfortable questions about its organisational strength, its relationship with key voter groups and its preparedness for the next Assembly elections, expected in 2028.

The four seats represented teachers’ and graduates’ constituencies, making the outcome particularly relevant to the political preferences of these electorates. The BJP and JD(S) coordinated their candidates, allowing the alliance to avoid splitting its support across the contests. Congress, despite holding power in Karnataka, failed to secure a single victory. The result gives the opposition a powerful political talking point and offers an early indication that its partnership can translate into electoral gains when both parties work together.

The most politically significant victory came in the Bengaluru Teachers’ constituency, where JD(S) candidate A.P. Ranganath defeated sitting Congress MLC Puttanna by 908 votes. Ranganath secured 10,810 votes against Puttanna’s 9,902. The contest carried additional significance because Puttanna had previously been associated with the JD(S) before joining Congress ahead of the 2023 Assembly elections. His defeat gives the regional party an opportunity to reclaim political ground in a constituency where its organisational network remains relevant.

The BJP also consolidated its position in the North-East Teachers’ constituency. Sitting MLC Shashil G. Namoshi defeated Congress candidate Sharanappa Mattur by 3,297 votes, securing 15,596 first-preference votes against Mattur’s 12,299. The result marked Namoshi’s fifth victory from the constituency. In the graduates’ constituencies, BJP candidates S.V. Sankanur and K.M. Suresh completed the alliance’s sweep, defeating their respective Congress opponents. These victories demonstrated the opposition’s ability to defend its established support while making gains at Congress’s expense.

An important aspect of the Karnataka election was that voting took place through ballot papers, as prescribed for these Legislative Council contests. The results cannot automatically be interpreted as a verdict on every policy of the state government, but they provide a meaningful snapshot of political mobilisation among registered teachers and graduates. These electorates are not identical to the wider voting population, and local candidate reputations, community equations and constituency-level organisation can significantly influence the outcome.

Nevertheless, the complete sweep presents a challenge for the Congress leadership. A ruling party normally seeks to use its organisational resources, political visibility and record in office to consolidate support. Losing all four seats suggests that the party must examine whether its local networks are functioning effectively and whether its message is reaching voters beyond its traditional support base. In Karnataka, the results also intensify scrutiny of the Congress leadership’s ability to manage internal political pressures while preparing for future electoral contests.

For the BJP, the victory provides momentum and reinforces its argument that the Congress government is vulnerable despite its Assembly majority. For the JD(S), the Bengaluru Teachers’ victory demonstrates the value of coordinated campaigning with its larger ally. The arrangement allowed the two parties to concentrate their efforts rather than compete against each other, an approach that could prove important in subsequent local and state-level elections.

The political implications, however, should not be overstated. The results do not threaten the immediate survival of the Congress government, which retains a majority in the 75-member Legislative Council. The election is more significant as a measure of opposition coordination and a warning about the ruling party’s performance among particular voter groups. Turning this result into a statewide electoral mandate will require the opposition to sustain its cooperation and appeal to a much broader electorate.

The next Assembly election is expected in 2028, leaving the major parties with considerable time to strengthen their organisations, address public concerns and reshape their political strategies. Congress will need to respond to the defeat with more than dismissals of the result as a limited contest. It must assess its candidate selection, campaign effectiveness and engagement with teachers, graduates and other influential constituencies.

Ultimately, the message from the MLC elections is straightforward: holding office does not guarantee electoral success. The BJP–JD(S) alliance has demonstrated that coordinated opposition can defeat the ruling party even in a state where Congress controls the government. Whether this momentum carries into the Assembly election remains uncertain, but the results have given the opposition a timely boost and placed the Congress leadership under renewed pressure to prove that it can retain public confidence.
