Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has come under intense scrutiny after a coordinated search by university security and local police in Sir Ziauddin Hall led to the recovery of live cartridges, counterfeit currency, forged documents, and multiple electronic devices from a hostel room allegedly occupied without authorization.
The operation was conducted on Wednesday evening following specific intelligence inputs. According to police sources, the team recovered bullets of a .32 bore pistol, four cartridges of a 12 bore weapon, counterfeit currency notes, eight mobile phones, and an empty magazine cover. Investigators also found additional materials, including identity documents and academic papers, which are being examined as part of a wider probe.
Illegal Occupation and Alleged Forced Takeover of Room
AMU Proctor Naveed Khan confirmed that preliminary findings suggest the room was occupied by an individual identified as Shevaj, who had allegedly been living there without permission for several months.
University authorities suspect that the individual may have forcibly displaced the legitimate occupants of the room before taking control of it. One of the original allottees has been detained and questioned to determine how the access was transferred or misused.
Officials are also examining whether the occupation involved coercion or collusion within the hostel system.
Academic Fraud, Multiple Enrolments, and Fake Identity Trail
Documents recovered from the room indicate that the accused had earlier enrolled in a course at AMU. However, official records classify him as a non-resident student, meaning he had no permission to stay inside the university hostel premises.
Investigators further found evidence suggesting possible academic manipulation, including enrolment in more than one programme, reportedly MCA and diploma engineering courses, along with fake marksheets and other forged academic credentials.
The seized materials also include Aadhaar and PAN cards along with other identity-related documents, all of which are now under verification to determine whether they were used to create false identities or secure fraudulent admissions.
Behavioural Pattern and Suspicious Movements Under the Lens
Police sources have also flagged behavioural irregularities linked to the accused. He is suspected of having maintained an unusual routine, reportedly remaining inside the room during the day and leaving at night.
Investigators are now trying to establish where he went during these nighttime movements, who he was in contact with, and what activities he may have been involved in. Officials believe this pattern could be relevant to understanding his wider network.
Link to Firing Incident and Possible Arms Trade Angle
The raid is directly connected to a firing incident reported in the Civil Lines area of Aligarh earlier this week. Three individuals were detained on Tuesday in connection with that case. During interrogation, the name of Shevaj surfaced, prompting police to trace his possible location to the AMU hostel.
Following this lead, the investigation team conducted the raid at Sir Ziauddin Hall.
Police are also exploring whether the accused may have links to illegal arms circulation, given the recovery of ammunition and his suspected involvement in prior criminal activity connected to firing incidents.
Digital Evidence and Network Mapping Underway
Authorities are now analysing eight mobile phones recovered from the room. Investigators are examining call detail records, SIM card ownership, and the identity of individuals who purchased or used the devices.
The objective is to map the suspect’s communication network and determine whether he was operating alone or as part of a wider group.
Administrative Action and Security Review at AMU
Senior Superintendent of Police Neeraj Kumar Jadaun confirmed that the seized materials are being thoroughly examined, and the accused remains absconding. Police teams are continuing searches, including coordination with authorities in Bulandshahr.
He further stated that the university administration has been advised to strictly restrict hostel access and prevent the entry of outsiders into residential halls. A formal communication is expected to be sent to AMU authorities recommending stricter enforcement measures.
As the investigation progresses, officials say multiple angles remain open, including illegal occupation of university property, document forgery, suspected arms activity, and the possible link to recent violent incidents in the region.
