India’s infrastructure push continues at an unprecedented pace, with two landmark projects receiving Cabinet approval: a Greenfield Airport at Kota-Bundi in Rajasthan at a cost of ₹1,507 crore and the construction of a 6-lane, access-controlled Capital Region Ring Road (Bhubaneswar Bypass) in Odisha worth ₹8,307.74 crore. These projects are more than just infrastructure they are gateways to new economic opportunities, job creation, and enhanced connectivity. While the Kota-Bundi Airport will serve Rajasthan’s industrial capital and educational hub, the Bhubaneswar bypass will decongest urban traffic and unlock massive economic potential in eastern India.

Greenfield Airport at Kota-Bundi: Boosting Rajasthan’s Industrial & Educational Capital

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has given the green light to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to develop a Greenfield Airport at Kota-Bundi. The project is estimated to cost ₹1,507 crore and will be built over 440.06 hectares of land already transferred by the Rajasthan Government.

Kota, renowned as India’s educational coaching hub and the industrial capital of Rajasthan, has long demanded modern aviation infrastructure. The upcoming airport will feature:

  • A runway of 3,200m x 45m, suitable for Airbus A-321 type aircraft.

  • A terminal building of 20,000 sqm capable of handling 1,000 peak-hour passengers, translating into an annual capacity of 2 million passengers.

  • An apron with 7 aircraft parking bays, ATC cum technical block, fire station, car parking, and other allied facilities.

The current Kota airport, with a runway of only 1,220m and limited to Code ‘B’ aircraft like Dornier 228, cannot support commercial operations due to land constraints and urbanization. The new facility is therefore not just an upgrade it is a necessity to cater to Kota’s rising educational and industrial traffic.

Capital Region Ring Road in Odisha: Decongesting Cities, Powering Growth

In another major move, the Cabinet approved the construction of a 110.875 km 6-lane, access-controlled Greenfield Capital Region Ring Road (Bhubaneswar Bypass) in Odisha at a capital cost of ₹8,307.74 crore. To be executed under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), the project will be a game-changer for Odisha and its neighboring states.

Currently, connectivity between Rameshwar and Tangi through NH routes faces heavy congestion, especially in highly urbanized stretches through Khordha, Bhubaneswar, and Cuttack. The new bypass will divert heavy commercial traffic away from city centers, significantly reducing travel time and logistics costs while easing traffic congestion.

Key highlights include:

  • Seamless integration with NH-55, NH-57, NH-655, and SH-65.

  • Multi-modal connectivity linking 10 economic nodes, 4 social nodes, and 5 logistics hubs.

  • Access to Bhubaneswar Airport, Khordha railway station, a proposed Multi-Modal Logistics Park, and two major ports (Puri and Astrang).

The project is projected to generate 74.43 lakh person-days of direct employment and 93.04 lakh person-days indirectly, delivering a massive boost to the local economy.

Economic and Social Impact of the Projects

Both the Kota-Bundi Airport and the Bhubaneswar bypass highlight the government’s dual vision: regional upliftment and national growth.

For Rajasthan, the new airport will:

  • Strengthen Kota’s position as a coaching hub by facilitating easier access for students nationwide.

  • Support industrial expansion by improving connectivity for trade and commerce.

  • Open new avenues in tourism, given Kota’s proximity to heritage and cultural centers.

For Odisha, the bypass will:

  • Reduce logistics costs by providing faster freight movement.

  • Enhance connectivity for industrial clusters, food parks, and tribal districts.

  • Unlock new trade opportunities via improved access to ports, railways, and logistics parks.

  • Improve road safety and urban livability in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Khordha by reducing inner-city traffic pressure.

Together, these projects are expected to catalyze socio-economic development while creating direct and indirect employment opportunities for lakhs of people.

India’s Infrastructure Push: Building the Future

The Cabinet approval of these two projects underscores India’s larger infrastructure push under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership. By addressing both urban congestion and regional connectivity gaps, the government is laying the foundation for sustainable growth.

The Greenfield Airport at Kota-Bundi represents India’s future in aviation infrastructure, tailored to meet rising demand from industrial and educational hubs. The Bhubaneswar bypass, on the other hand, stands as a symbol of transformative road connectivity, balancing urban ease with industrial growth.

Infrastructure as the Backbone of India’s Growth

India’s economic rise depends heavily on its ability to build and modernize infrastructure. The approval of the Greenfield Airport in Kota-Bundi and the 6-lane Capital Region Ring Road in Odisha is a testament to this commitment.

Both projects will not only ease connectivity and reduce congestion but also generate massive employment, promote trade, and elevate India’s global competitiveness. They embody the government’s vision of an India that is both locally empowered and globally connected. By investing in airports, highways, and logistics hubs, India is not just building infrastructure—it is laying the foundation for prosperity, opportunity, and sustainable growth for generations to come.
