From Service to Yogasana: Armed Forces Bet on Yoga to Give Agniveers a Head Start as Instructors

From Service to Yogasana: Armed Forces Bet on Yoga to Give Agniveers a Head Start as Instructors

For all its Indian origins, yoga still runs short of the one thing it needs most to reach a wider audience: enough people qualified to teach it. The armed forces think they may have found part of the answer in their own ranks.

The Indian Navy has commenced an eight-week yoga training course at Command and Area Headquarters, part of the transition support built for Agniveers completing their engagement. Graduates of the course receive a certificate in basic yoga training and Yogasana proficiency, issued by the authorised yoga instructor or recognised training institution engaged to run it. The course weaves in regular yoga sessions during morning PT and evening games, alongside intra-Command Yogasana competitions, and flags its strongest participants for recognised Yoga Instructor courses and national-level competitions down the line.

That last point is worth underlining, because it’s easy to read more into this than is actually there. Finishing the course doesn’t make anyone a qualified yoga instructor. It only certifies that the fundamentals are solid and that Yogasana technique is up to standard — a starting point, not a finish line. The instructor track is a separate, later stage, open only to those judged capable enough to be steered toward it. The initiative aims to enhance physical fitness, mental well-being and post-service employability of Agniveers.

The first batch of Agniveers, inducted in 2022, is due to pass out this year, and the course has been built around getting this outgoing cohort ready before they step back into civilian life.

The armed forces have wrapped this and similar efforts into a theme they call ‘Serve, Learn, Transition, Lead’: the idea that a stint in uniform should leave a person with something usable afterward, not just an ending. Yoga suits that logic unusually well. It costs little to teach, needs no equipment, and draws on a kind of physical discipline Agniveers already have in abundance.

What makes it worth pursuing is the size of the opening on the other side. There has been a persistent shortfall industry bodies have been flagging for years, even as interest in yoga keeps climbing worldwide. Projections for the global yoga and meditation market point to several-fold growth over the coming decade, which means a certified Agniveer isn’t just picking up a fallback skill; they’re stepping into a field with room to actually grow.
