Terming Khalistani extremism a “Canadian problem” which should be tackled without any further delay, Indian-origin Canadian MP Chandra Arya has urged the Justin Trudeau government to act against people involved in Khalistani activities, and ensure safety and security of Hindus living in the country.
“…this is a Canadian problem, and it is the duty of all levels of our government and our law enforcement agencies to address it,” Arya was quoted as saying in the media reports.
He alleged that Khalistani extremism was fostered by Canadian political parties with vested interests.
Meanwhile, Trudeau government refused to take any action against such people, citing their right to peaceful protest.
According to reports, the lawmaker also expressed concern for the safety and security of Hindus staying in Canada, saying many of them feel threatened by the recent surge in anti-India Khalistani activities.
Sharing his own experience, Arya revealed that he himself had to participate in a Hindu event in Edmonton guarded by police officers due to disruptive demonstrations by Khalistani protesters.
“As a Hindu Member of Parliament, I too have experienced these concerns first hand,” Arya said.
“Unfortunately, I have yet to hear any politician or government official offer reassurance to Hindu-Canadians, many of whom feel concerned and fearful for their safety in light of recent events.”
He also urged Hindu-Canadians to raise their voice and seek accountability from the political leadership.
“Together, we must ensure that our safety and interests are protected,” he was quoted as saying in the reports.
Arya stressed that any foreign interference in Canadian affairs is “unacceptable”, but said that the ongoing on-going issue between India and Canada was impacting their relationship.
“It is critical that we all recognize the importance of eliminating cross-border threats posed by Khalistani extremism and resume our efforts to address it effectively,” he said.
“The persistence of Canadian Khalistani extremism is rooted in the political patronage these extremists enjoy,” he added.
Arya has been a vocal critic of Khalistani extremism in Canada, condemning attacks on Hindus in the country mostly carried out by pro-Khalistan elements.
