Ranbir Kapoor, one of the finest products of nepotism, made a comeback after a four-year gap. It was only a month back when Karan Malhotra’s ‘Shamshera’ was released in which Ranbir played the protagonist. Now, he is all set to hit the theatres again with Ayan Mukerji’s ‘Brahmastra’. However, the movie, even before its release, has landed in hot soup.

The fate of ‘Brahmastra’ seems to be hanging by a thread. While the film is yet to release, the demand for a boycott of the film has already started. Boycott Brahmastra keeps trending on Twitter every day. After the statements of Karan Johar and Alia Bhatt, a trend was already started against the film. Now, another video of Ranbir Kapoor is making rounds on social media.
In the video, Ranbir Kapoor can be heard saying that “he likes to eat beef.” This has infuriated the cinemagoers and they have started demanding to “Boycott Brahmastra.” People are calling out the actor for playing the character of Shiva in Brahmastra while eating such food.
The actor while talking about food revealed how much he enjoys eating red meat rather than chicken. Ranbir Kapoor said, “I’m not a big chicken guy, I feel the chicken is the soya food on non-vegetarians, I’m a more mutton, paaya, beef, red meet, I’m a big beef guy.”(sic)
From Rumi to Shiva
While people were already fuming over Ranbir Kapoor eating beef, Brahmastra director Ayan Mukerji has become another reason for inviting the wrath. Brahmastra director, in 2019, had put a post on Instagram revealing that ‘Shiva’ was originally set to be called ‘Rumi’.
Ayan’s Instagram post informed that “Ranbir’s character name was changed from ‘Rumi’ to ‘Shiva’.” The film went from being called ‘Dragon’ to ‘Brahmastra’.The picture he had posted was from Ranbir’s ‘look test’ for ‘Rumi’ in which he can be seen sporting long hair and a melancholic expression.
In an explanation to what inspired him to change the actor’s look from ‘Rumi’ to ‘Shiva’, Mukerji said, “…Rumi said, ‘Love is the bridge between you and everything…’, and that feeling is the foundation we started building the protagonist of this movie on… But then, there was new inspiration, newer thoughts… Dragon became ‘Brahmāstra’, we gave Ranbir a haircut, and Rumi became… Shiva.”
The post from 2019 has also become another reason for the people to vent out their anger against the film.
Bollywood is hanging by a thread
Indian audience is evolving. They are more awakened and sensitive toward what they are watching and whether the films are worth their money or not. They immediately reject the propaganda-infested films and praise those with authentic content that is entertaining and/or has a message behind it.

Unfortunately, the upcoming films appear to be failing when it comes to content that is propaganda free. ‘Brahmastra’ is already stirring controversy for hurting religious sentiments. The film is based on Hindu beliefs and Bhagwan Shiva. There is a scene in the trailer that displays Ranbir entering a temple wearing footwear. However, Ayan Mukherji, the director of the film, later clarified that it was a durga puja pandal and not a temple. These debates may sound irrelevant but will have a negative impact on the film’s performance.
