It is safe to say that the Communist government in Nepal have failed to provide the desired governance during the times of the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic. From a constant power struggle between PM Oli and Prachanda to becoming Xi Jinping’s lackey and alienating traditional ally India to bungling in the handling of the pandemic to acting as a mute bystander when China illegally grabbed Nepalese territories, the Nepalese Communist government has done it all. This has caused considerable unease amongst the locals as recently a mass demonstration took place in Kathmandu in favour of the restoration of the monarchy in Nepal.
When a democratic country protests to revert back to a monarchy, you know that the democratic government at the helm has grossly failed. Nepali locals mostly youth, recently hit the streets where they chanted strong slogans in favour of Nepal’s former king and the Hindu monarchy.
Notably, during the rally, the protestors demanded the rein-station of constitutional monarchy in Nepal so as to foster national unity and well-being of the country’s people. Furthermore, not only did the protestors chanted slogans against the Federal Democratic Republican system which was adopted by Nepal in 2008, but also demanded for Nepal to be again declared as a Hindu state.
Reportedly, several protests broke out in major cities like Pokhara and Butwal with the common demand of reinstating the 240-year-old institution of monarchy which was abolished in 2008.
This development comes at a time amidst the never-ending power struggle between PM Oli and Prachanda amidst the Nepalese Communist Party. Time and again, Chinese ambassador Hou Yanqi had to intervene to prevent a certain downfall of the communist government in Nepal.
Furthermore, Nepal’s sharp turn towards China left many in the country befuddled as the Oli administration alienated its traditional ally India perhaps under the influence of Chinese Yuan. From claiming Indian territories of Lipulekh and Kalapani to blaming the spread of the Wuhan virus in Nepal on India to foolishly claiming that Lord Ram was born in erstwhile Nepal, Oli behaved in a way which was unbecoming of a head of state — all under the influence of Xi Jinping and his lackeys.
Sitting in Xi Jinping’s lap had its own pitfalls which Oli learned the hard way as an expansionist China started illegally grabbing Nepali territories across the border.
Perhaps after some soul searching, Oli is scaling back his anti-India rhetoric and is looking to mend ties in order to counter China which is hell-bent on making Nepal its latest client state.
It seems that a series of blunders by the Oli government has pushed the Nepali people on the edge and have brought them on the streets with the sole demand of ushering back the era of the monarchy in Nepal.
