As the results of the Mizoram state assembly election have started to pour in, one thing is clear that Congress has been completely wiped off from North-Eastern states. The counting of votes in the five states is almost in its last phase. Out of 40 seats in Mizoram, MNF is leading (or won) on around 26 seats while Congress leads on 5 seats whereas, 8 seats seem to be going in the favour of ZPM-IND, a party lead by Lalduhoma. Moreover, the BJP leads on a single seat.
Mizo National Front (MNF) has emerged as the biggest party in Mizoram election. MNF used to be a part of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA). MNF is currently lead by Pu Zoramthanga, who will most probably be the next CM of Mizoram. The shocking news is that the condition of the Congress party in the state has only worsened. Not only the Congress is reduced to 5 seats, but also Lal Thanhawla, incumbent CM of the state lost on both the seats, Champhai South and Serchhip.

It is evident that “Congress Mukt Bharat” slogan proposed by PM Modi may soon be a ground reality. Congress is almost gasping for breath in the Northeast states of India. Political commentators had already speculated a Congress defeat in the state. Reports suggested that ZPM party lead by Lalduhoma, a former IPS officer and former in-charge of Indira Gandhi’s security, may act as the kingmaker. But results totally convey a contrary story.

A few days back, Pu Lalduhoma prophesied that ZPM’s will end the Congress’s rule in Mizoram. He also added, “We will have a greater say in government formation. At present all indications are we will have a majority. But if it is a hung house, ZPM will play a decisive role. Neither Congress nor MNF can form the government without our help”. Although his party looks to win 8 seats only, his prophecy about the Congress party seems to turn in to reality.
Congress party is giving credit to party president Rahul Gandhi for its win in the states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. Interestingly, they seem to be ignoring the results of Mizoram and Telangana where they have been totally wiped off.
On the other hand, the reason behind BJP’s defeat in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh is the anti-incumbency factor. The vote share of BJP and Congress is almost the same in all the states.
Now, the mainstream media will try to project it as a trailer of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections but this certainly, is not the case. In fact, the BJP has managed to spread its vote base in places, traditionally it was not considered so strong.
