The political controversy surrounding Baramulla has reopened difficult questions about Kashmir’s traumatic history and the responsibilities of political leaders discussing Pakistan. Farooq Abdullah, the National Conference president and former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, has repeatedly advocated dialogue with Pakistan, a position that critics argue fails to adequately account for the country’s role in the region’s history of conflict. His remarks and political approach have attracted criticism from those who believe that engagement with Islamabad must be accompanied by an unambiguous recognition of the security challenges India continues to face. In a region where historical memories remain deeply contested, Abdullah’s statements have once again placed the relationship between political pragmatism, national security and public accountability under scrutiny.

On October 22–24, 1947, Pakistan-backed tribal raiders advanced into Jammu and Kashmir, attacking towns and villages on their route towards Srinagar. Baramulla suffered devastating violence, including killings, looting and destruction affecting civilians and religious institutions. The invasion threatened the capital and prompted Maharaja Hari Singh to seek Indian military assistance. Following the signing of the Instrument of Accession on October 26, Indian troops were airlifted to Srinagar the next day. The events left a lasting scar on the region’s collective memory and remain a significant part of the historical context surrounding India-Pakistan relations.

Nearly eight decades later, Farooq Abdullah’s position on Pakistan continues to generate fierce political debate. His advocacy of dialogue reflects a long-standing argument that sustained communication between New Delhi and Islamabad could help reduce tensions and create conditions for stability in Jammu and Kashmir. Supporters consider engagement a necessary diplomatic instrument, particularly given the human cost of prolonged hostility. Critics, however, contend that dialogue cannot be pursued in isolation from Pakistan’s historical conduct, cross-border terrorism and the security concerns of Indian citizens.

The central criticism directed at Abdullah is not simply that he favours negotiations. It is whether his public statements adequately acknowledge the realities that have shaped Kashmir’s troubled relationship with Pakistan. Political leaders who advocate reconciliation must explain how dialogue can produce meaningful results without compromising national security or overlooking the suffering of those affected by violence. For critics, any approach that places diplomatic engagement above accountability risks sending the wrong message about the seriousness of these concerns.

The history of Baramulla is particularly relevant to this debate because it demonstrates how quickly political and territorial ambitions can translate into civilian suffering. The memories of 1947 are not merely historical references; they form part of the lived and inherited experiences of families whose communities endured the invasion. While present-day diplomacy cannot be dictated entirely by events from the past, responsible political discourse must acknowledge that history rather than treat it as an inconvenient obstacle to contemporary negotiations.

Abdullah’s defenders would argue that speaking to Pakistan does not amount to endorsing its policies or rejecting India’s sovereignty. Dialogue between adversaries is a recognised instrument of foreign policy, and democratically elected leaders are entitled to advocate different approaches to resolving long-standing disputes. Nevertheless, critics maintain that such proposals deserve rigorous scrutiny, especially when they concern a neighbour whose relationship with India has been marked by wars, militant violence and recurring border tensions.

The distinction between political disagreement and disloyalty is essential. Describing Abdullah as pro-Pakistani is a political judgement, not an established fact merely because he supports dialogue. His statements should be assessed in their full context, and criticism should focus on verifiable remarks, policies and their implications. Equally, public figures should expect their positions to be challenged when opponents believe that their words inadequately reflect the experiences of victims or the demands of national security.

For many observers, the debate over Baramulla is ultimately about how India should remember its past while determining its future. Historical suffering should neither prevent every diplomatic initiative nor be dismissed in the pursuit of political expediency. Leaders advocating engagement with Pakistan must make a persuasive case for how it can advance peace while protecting Indian interests. Their critics, in turn, should ground their arguments in evidence rather than rely solely on inflammatory labels.

Farooq Abdullah’s political position will continue to attract opposing interpretations, reflecting the wider disagreement over how India should approach Pakistan. What should remain beyond dispute is the importance of historical accuracy, democratic accountability and the security of Indian citizens. Baramulla’s tragic past deserves to be remembered honestly, while contemporary political arguments should be judged on their actual substance. The challenge for any leader is to pursue peace without diminishing historical suffering or weakening public confidence in the country’s commitment to its sovereignty.
