Malayalam superstar Mohanlal’s upcoming film, previously known only by its working title L367, was officially unveiled on September 4, 2026, when Mohanlal shared its first-look poster on social media, revealing the title as “Operation Ganga.”
The film’s title is drawn directly from history. Operation Ganga was the evacuation mission carried out by the Indian government to rescue its citizens stranded in Ukraine and neighbouring countries during the 2022 Russian invasion, coordinated by the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Air Force along with several commercial carriers. The real operation, which ran from late February to mid-March 2022, brought home roughly 25,000 Indian nationals along with 147 citizens of other countries, though it was not without tragedy — one Indian student was killed and another injured during the crisis.
The film aims to bring the events surrounding that mission to the screen, focusing on the challenges of extracting stranded Indian citizens, many of them students, from an active conflict zone.
Director and Cast
Operation Ganga is directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Vishnu Mohan, who previously helmed the Malayalam hit “Meppadiyan,” for which he won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam. Mohanlal leads a multilingual, pan-Indian ensemble that includes Bollywood actors Arjun Rampal and Adil Hussain, along with Bhagyashri Borse and R. Parthiban — a cast mix designed to give the film cross-industry appeal. The project marks one of several upcoming films Mohanlal has announced with younger, rising directors.
A Heavyweight Technical Crew
The film’s technical team draws talent from some of the biggest recent pan-Indian hits. Cinematographer Miroslaw Kuba Brozek, known for shooting both “Pushpa” films, is behind the camera, while production designer Rajeevan brings credits including “GOAT,” “Meiyazhagan,” “Amaran” and “Kathanar.” Action director Sea Young Oh, recognised for his stunt work on “Dhurandhar” and “Kill,” is choreographing the film’s action sequences. Music is composed by Shashwat Sachdev, fresh off scoring “Dhurandhar,” while the crew also includes editor Shameer Mohammed and sound designer Bishwadeep Chatterjee, whose past credits include “Dhurandhar” and “Uri: The Surgical Strike.”
Production Scale
Operation Ganga is being mounted as a major pan-Indian production by Sree Gokulam Movies, backed by Gokulam Gopalan, with Baiju Gopalan and V. C. Praveen as co-producers and Krishnamoorthy as executive producer. Filming has already begun in Georgia, with Mohanlal expected to join the shoot soon. The production is planned as an extensive 180-day shoot spanning Poland, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Delhi, Dehradun and Kochi — reflecting the scale of the real-life evacuation the film is built around.
The announcement follows Mohanlal’s completion of director Tharun Moorthy’s “Thudarum” follow-up, “Athimanoharam.”
