Bollywood actor Katrina Kaif has become the latest high-profile target of online body-shaming, after her postpartum appearance drew a wave of unkind commentary — reviving a long-running conversation about how female celebrities are scrutinised, particularly around motherhood.
Kaif, who welcomed her first child, a son named Vihaan Kaushal, with husband Vicky Kaushal on November 7, 2025, has made only a handful of public appearances since. Two of them triggered significant backlash. At filmmaker Kuku Kohli’s funeral in Mumbai, and later at the Ambani family’s Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations on September 14, 2026, photographs and videos of Kaif circulated widely, prompting a flood of comments about her weight and changed appearance. Social media users wrote things like “she looks like a rasgulla” and “she got 100% Indianized,” according to reports, with some comparing her unfavourably to how she looked earlier in her career.
How she responded
Rather than addressing the trolling directly, Kaif spoke about her postpartum experience in a subsequent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, tied to her beauty brand Kay Beauty’s expansion into skincare. She said her skin became “even more sensitive” after pregnancy, requiring her to relearn what products worked for her, and described searching for things that felt “soothing, calming and restorative.”
Asked how her idea of “looking her best” had evolved since her modelling days, Kaif said the industry once imposed rigid beauty stereotypes, but that her priorities have since shifted: “Now for me, looking my best is really about feeling my best, and that comes from taking care of myself as a whole.” She pointed to a healthy diet, staying active, meditation, and a phone-free hour each morning as part of that shift.
The pushback against the trolls
The backlash to Kaif’s trolling was notable in its own right. Her Mere Brother Ki Dulhan co-star Ali Zafar publicly questioned why men feel entitled to judge women’s bodies against standards they themselves created. Actor Salman Khan also addressed postpartum trolling on the reality show Bigg Boss, and a radio presenter reportedly apologised to Kaif for remarks made about her appearance. Commentary pieces in outlets like The Tribune quoted women in the industry calling for empathy, arguing that a new mother’s priority should be her health and her baby’s, not conforming to public expectations of how she should look.
Why this keeps happening to female celebrities
Kaif’s experience fits a familiar pattern, one that recurs almost every time a well-known actress becomes a mother. Commentators point to a few recurring dynamics:
A body treated as public property. Actresses are often valued professionally for their looks, which seems to invite the public to treat any physical change — especially one as significant as pregnancy — as open for comment, in a way rarely extended to their male peers.
Unrealistic recovery expectations. There is enormous, often unspoken pressure on new mothers to “bounce back” quickly, disregarding the reality that postpartum bodies change over months or years, not weeks.
A gendered double standard. Male actors who gain weight or change physically for roles or through age are frequently unbothered, or even praised for looking “real.” Actresses face the opposite: any deviation from a narrow standard is treated as decline, not humanity.
Anonymity emboldening cruelty. Social media allows critics to weigh in on a stranger’s body without consequence or accountability, often amplifying the harshest voices rather than tempering them.
Several commentators framed the Kaif episode as part of a broader reckoning, arguing that the volume of public pushback in her case — from co-stars, fellow actors, and fans — signals a slow shift in how such trolling is being received, even if the underlying behaviour hasn’t gone away.
