India has granted marketing authorisation for its first dengue vaccine, marking a landmark moment in the country’s long battle against a disease that infects millions every monsoon season.
The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, announced on July 21, 2026 that it had approved the Dengue Tetravalent Vaccine (Live, Attenuated) — branded Qdenga — manufactured by Takeda GmbH of Germany and set to be imported and distributed in India by Takeda Biopharmaceuticals India Pvt. Ltd. The approval followed a comprehensive scientific review of the vaccine’s quality, safety and efficacy under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and the Drugs Rules, 1945.
Qdenga is a live, attenuated tetravalent vaccine built using recombinant DNA technology. It is engineered on a dengue virus type-2 backbone, into which genes encoding surface proteins from the other three dengue serotypes have been inserted, giving it balanced protection against all four strains of the virus — DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3 and DEN-4. That breadth of coverage matters because dengue’s four serotypes don’t offer cross-protection: infection with one strain doesn’t guard against the others, and repeat infections can turn more severe due to a phenomenon called antibody-dependent enhancement, which is precisely what makes a broad-spectrum vaccine so valuable.
The vaccine has been approved for people aged 4 to 60 years and is administered as two doses, given three months apart. Notably, it requires no pre-vaccination screening, meaning people who have previously had dengue can also receive it without first being tested for past infection — a practical advantage in a country where dengue exposure is widespread and testing infrastructure is uneven.
The Health Ministry has described dengue as one of India’s most pressing vector-borne health concerns, with the country recording between 3 and 4 million cases annually according to Ministry data, and outbreaks intensifying with the monsoon each year. Globally, the World Health Organization estimates dengue infects between 100 and 400 million people a year, with nearly half the world’s population now at risk as rising temperatures and dense urban growth widen the mosquito’s range.
Qdenga is already approved in 42 countries, including the European Union, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Indonesia, and its approval in India follows years of anticipation. Domestic vaccine makers had also been racing to develop homegrown alternatives: Indian Immunologicals had targeted an early-2026 commercial launch for its own candidate, while Panacea Biotec’s single-dose vaccine, DengiAll, entered final Phase III trials earlier this year with more than 10,000 volunteers enrolled under the Indian Council of Medical Research’s oversight. To help scale domestic supply of Qdenga itself, Takeda has also struck a manufacturing collaboration with Indian vaccine maker Biological E.
With regulatory clearance now secured, attention turns to rollout — pricing, availability, and how the vaccine will be integrated into India’s public health strategy alongside existing mosquito-control and prevention efforts, which officials stress remain essential even with a vaccine now on the table.
