Questions surrounding Ajinkya Shinde and his links with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have intensified after reports and recent developments drew attention to the political backgrounds of senior members of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a youth-led pressure group that has organised protests on education and electoral issues.
The controversy comes as the CJP prepares for another confrontation with authorities. Mumbai Police recently declined permission for the organisation’s proposed October 2 protest at Shivaji Park against the Election Commission and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. According to police and PTI reports, the application for the demonstration was submitted on September 26 by Ajinkya Shinde, who serves as the CJP’s National Organisation In-Charge. Police cited existing High Court directions, government guidelines, the absence of necessary civic clearance and possible traffic disruption in declining permission.
The latest controversy is not limited to the Mumbai protest. Attention has increasingly focused on Ajinkya Shinde because of his earlier association with AAP in Maharashtra. The Indian Express reported in 2020 that he was a member of the AAP youth wing in Pune and had travelled to Delhi as an AAP volunteer during the Assembly election campaign. Earlier reports have also identified him as president of the AAP youth wing in Maharashtra.
In August this year, the CJP formally announced its national organisational structure, appointing Ajinkya Shinde as National Organisation In-Charge. The group described itself as a pressure movement rather than a conventional political party and said it had no immediate intention of entering electoral politics. The organisation had emerged prominently during its 36-day protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, where it raised concerns surrounding competitive examinations and alleged irregularities affecting students.
Reports questioning the political connections of the movement have since examined the backgrounds of several CJP office-bearers. ThePrint reported last month that a number of people in the organisation’s core structure had previous AAP associations. It specifically reported that Ajinkya Shinde had been described on his social-media profiles as a former AAP Youth Wing functionary in Maharashtra and Sah Prabhari for Goa. The same report said his Instagram account was no longer available and his Facebook page had been deactivated.
The issue received renewed attention after a September 27 report by OpIndia described an Instagram live session involving CJP figures and Ajinkya Shinde. The publication alleged that comments made during the interaction indicated a role for Shinde in managing earlier protests. These claims remain part of a political controversy, and they should be distinguished from independently established facts about his previous AAP positions and his current CJP role.
The CJP’s public activities have also brought legal and administrative scrutiny. In August, an FIR was registered in Maharashtra’s Latur district against CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, Ajinkya Shinde and others following allegations concerning entry into a government school without permission. Hindustan Times reported that the complaint accused the group of disrupting official work and threatening teachers; the allegations are matters for the legal process and do not by themselves establish guilt.
The current dispute therefore centres on a straightforward but politically significant question: how should a movement present itself when some of its leading organisers have previous political affiliations? The CJP has presented itself as an independent youth movement and pressure group, while critics have highlighted the AAP backgrounds of several organisers. Those competing descriptions are central to the debate over the organisation’s political identity.
For now, the immediate issue is the proposed October 2 demonstration. Mumbai Police have said they are not empowered to approve a gathering at Shivaji Park under the applicable court orders and government guidelines and have indicated that organisers may seek an alternative venue. The episode has placed Ajinkya Shinde once again at the centre of attention, both as the person who submitted the protest application and as a senior figure in a movement whose political connections are increasingly being examined.
