Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has received one of the sharpest religious censures faced by a serving Chief Minister in recent years after Sri Akal Takht Sahib publicly held him responsible in the viral video controversy and questioned his credibility before the Sikh Panth. The decision was announced following a meeting of the five Singh Sahibans, marking a significant intervention by the highest temporal authority of Sikhism in a matter that now carries both political and religious implications.
Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj urged the Sikh Sangat to socially boycott Mann, stating that the Chief Minister had appeared before the Akal Takht and claimed that the controversial video circulating on social media had been created using Artificial Intelligence technology. However, the Sikh religious authority said its examination of the matter did not support that assertion.
Two Forensic Examinations Found Video Genuine
Addressing the controversy, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj said the viral video was examined by two separate forensic laboratories. According to the findings cited by the Akal Takht, both forensic examinations concluded that the footage was genuine and showed no evidence of editing, manipulation, or interference through AI technology.
The Jathedar further stated that Mann had himself expressed willingness to undergo a forensic examination of the video. Following this, the Akal Takht Secretariat sent a letter to the Chief Minister in January. According to the Sikh religious authority, no response was received to that communication.
Taking a stern view of the matter, Gargaj said that a person who could stand before the Akal Takht Sahib and make a false claim could not be expected to take decisions in the interest of the Sikh Panth. The remarks reflected the seriousness with which the institution views the controversy and its implications for public trust and religious accountability.
Guru Granth Sahib Bill Triggers Fresh Concerns
The meeting also examined the Punjab government’s “Jagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Amendment Bill”, which has emerged as another point of contention between the state government and Sikh religious authorities.
The Akal Takht expressed concern that Sikh scholars, religious institutions and Panthic organisations were not adequately consulted before the legislation was drafted. According to the Sikh clergy, a matter of such profound religious significance warranted extensive discussion and wider consultation before being translated into law.
In response, the Akal Takht has summoned all Sikh legislators who signed the Bill, along with members of the Punjab Cabinet, to appear before the institution on 29 June. The move signals the religious authority’s dissatisfaction with the legislative process adopted by the state government on an issue directly linked to Sikh religious sentiments.
Political Pressure Mounts on Punjab Government
The twin developments have triggered a fresh political storm in Punjab, placing Bhagwant Mann and his government under intense scrutiny from both opposition parties and influential religious institutions. By rejecting the Chief Minister’s explanation in the viral video controversy while simultaneously questioning the government’s approach to legislation concerning Sikh religious matters, the Akal Takht has escalated its confrontation with the Punjab administration.
Attention is now firmly focused on how Mann and his Cabinet respond to the unprecedented rebuke. With questions being raised over both the Chief Minister’s credibility and the government’s handling of sensitive religious issues, the controversy is set to remain at the centre of Punjab’s political discourse in the days ahead.
