The Indian Air Force (IAF) said on Saturday that one of its IL-76MD heavy-lift transport aircraft has landed at Nyoma in eastern Ladakh at an altitude of 13,629 feet, the highest landing ever made by the aircraft anywhere in the world.
The IAF announced the landing in a post on X, crediting the skill and precision of the crew and calling it a milestone for India’s strategic airlift capability.
What exactly is the record?
The record is for the IL-76MD aircraft, not for any aircraft. The IAF’s post says the landing was the highest ever by this type. It does not claim a world record for all aircraft.
The distinction matters because Nyoma is not the highest airstrip the IAF has used. In August 2013, an IAF C-130J Super Hercules landed at Daulat Beg Oldi in Ladakh at about 16,600 feet, a record for that aircraft.
Why does altitude make landing harder?
At high altitude the air is thinner. Engines produce less thrust, wings generate less lift, and a heavy aircraft needs more speed and runway to land and take off safely. Crews also have less margin for error, and cold, wind and mountain terrain add to the risk. That is why a landing at this height by a large four-engine transport is treated as a test of both the aircraft and its crew.
Nyoma, officially the Mudh-Nyoma Advanced Landing Ground, lies in Leh district, close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. It was built in 1962 and reactivated around 2009, and was later upgraded to handle fighter aircraft. News reports say it was commissioned as a fighter base in November 2025, when the then chief of air staff landed a C-130J there. Reports commonly give its height as about 13,700 feet, slightly above the IAF’s figure for this landing.
The IL-76 is not new to the area. In August 2012, an IL-76 dropped paratroopers over a drop zone in the Nyoma area at about 13,700 feet, which Guinness World Records lists as the highest drop zone.
Why the IL-76?
The IL-76MD is a Soviet-designed four-engine transport that the IAF has used since the 1980s for moving troops, vehicles and heavy equipment. It can carry far larger loads than the smaller aircraft that usually serve Ladakh’s forward airfields. Landing one at Nyoma shows the airfield can handle the type, which could allow heavy loads to be flown directly to a base near the LAC and not moved over long mountain roads.
The IAF has not said when the landing took place, which squadron flew it, or whether the aircraft was carrying cargo. It has also not said whether the landing was a one-off test or the start of regular IL-76 operations at Nyoma.
