India and Italy have moved decisively to reframe their bilateral relationship into a forward-looking strategic axis, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni jointly outlining an ambitious roadmap that stretches across trade, technology, energy, defence, and global connectivity. In a joint op-ed published today, the two leaders declared that ties have reached a “decisive stage”, marking a shift from longstanding diplomatic warmth to a structured Special Strategic Partnership grounded in democratic values and a shared vision of the future.
A strategic partnership at a turning point
At the heart of the vision lies the idea of an interconnected “Indo-Mediterranean” space, which both leaders describe as a single strategic continuum linking the Indo-Pacific with the Mediterranean. They argue that these regions can no longer be viewed in isolation, given their growing role in global trade routes, energy flows, digital infrastructure, and security dynamics. Positioned at the centre of these two economic hubs, India and Italy see themselves as natural partners in shaping the emerging global order.
Trade ambitions and industrial synergy
Economic cooperation forms a central pillar of the roadmap, with both sides committing to exceeding €20 billion in bilateral trade by 2029. The focus spans defence, aerospace, clean energy, machinery, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and tourism, alongside chemicals, automotive components, and agri-food sectors. The leaders highlighted the presence of over 1,000 companies operating across both countries, reflecting deepening industrial integration between European manufacturing strengths and India’s expanding innovation ecosystem, which includes more than 100 unicorns and nearly 200,000 startups.
They emphasised a complementary partnership model where Italian design and manufacturing excellence align with India’s engineering talent, market scale, and entrepreneurial dynamism.
Technology, AI, and ethical governance
A significant portion of the op-ed focused on emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, quantum computing, cybersecurity, and digital infrastructure. Both countries underscored that technological progress must remain human-centred, warning against misuse that could undermine rights or democratic processes.
The collaboration draws on India’s “MANAV” vision, which places technology in the service of humanity, and Italy’s “algor-ethics” framework rooted in humanist traditions. The leaders also linked this approach to outcomes of the AI Impact Summit 2026 in Delhi and Italy’s G7 Presidency, reinforcing a shared commitment to ethical global tech governance.
Security cooperation and global stability
India and Italy also committed to strengthening cooperation against terrorism, cybercrime, drug trafficking, and human trafficking, while enhancing maritime security and protection of critical supply chains. The partnership extends to strategic infrastructure resilience and defence collaboration amid global geopolitical uncertainty.
Energy transition and connectivity corridors
Energy cooperation emerges as another key area, with emphasis on renewable energy, green hydrogen, smart grids, and sustainable infrastructure. Both countries reaffirmed participation in global initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance, Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, and Global Biofuels Alliance.
The Indo-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), announced during the G20 Summit in Delhi in 2023, was highlighted as a transformative framework linking transport systems, energy networks, digital corridors, and trade routes across continents.
Civilisational links and global outlook
Beyond economics and strategy, the op-ed also drew parallels between India’s philosophical traditions, such as “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” and Italy’s Renaissance humanism, presenting the partnership as a meeting point of civilisational ideas.
