India is preparing to launch its first hydrogen-powered train, marking a major step toward clean and sustainable rail transport. The train will soon operate on the Jind–Sonipat route in Haryana, positioning Indian Railways among global leaders in green mobility.
Notably, this will be India’s first hydrogen train and the world’s longest of its kind. The project reflects the Railways’ push for zero-emission technology and energy self-reliance.
High Speed, Zero Emissions
The hydrogen train will run at speeds between 110 and 140 kmph. It will produce zero carbon emissions and minimal noise, offering a quieter and cleaner travel experience. Moreover, passengers can expect comfort similar to that of an aircraft.
The train has been manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai. It can carry more than 2,600 passengers in a single run. Each day, it will complete two trips, covering a total distance of 356 kilometres.
Modern Coach Facilities
Inside the coaches, the Railways has focused on comfort and safety. Each coach includes temperature sensors, modern toilets, and washbasins. In addition, blue cushioned seats, ceiling-mounted fans, and LED lighting panels enhance the travel experience.
For standing passengers, the coaches feature strong blue handgrips, ensuring safety during the journey.

Power Supply for Hydrogen Plant
Meanwhile, the Haryana government has taken steps to support the project’s infrastructure. Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi held a meeting in Chandigarh to ensure round-the-clock 11 kV power supply to the hydrogen plant. He directed officials to regularly review the system and strengthen backup arrangements.
Fare and Launch Timeline
Initially, the train will run between Sonipat and Jind, with four to five stops along the route. The fare is expected to range between ₹5 and ₹25, making it affordable for daily commuters. However, officials have not yet issued a formal announcement.
At present, a CNG-powered train operates on this route. Therefore, the shift to hydrogen aims to reduce costs while cutting emissions. The government views the project as a flagship initiative, although the official launch date is still awaited. Overall, the hydrogen train is not just a new service. Instead, it signals the future direction of Indian Railways, combining clean energy, modern technology, and affordable public transport.
